Freescale and Bluetechnix competition

awinning
awinning over 14 years ago

Freescale and Bluetechnix have asked me to run a competition with three Bluetechnix SBC-iMX51 boards as prizes. I've posted the main specs of the board below, and if you need more information I've also linked the datasheet. All you have to do is tell us what you'd use the board for if you won. After the event I'll include the answers in one or more polls and you can vote for the best ideas. Winners of the poll(s) get the boards

You have until May 3rd to get your entry in

SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51

The Single-Board Computer SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51 is based on Freescale’s high-performance i.MX51 mobile platform, incorporating

an ARM Cortex-A8 CPU, an Image Processing Unit (IPUv3EX), a Video Processing Unit (VPU) and a Graphical Processing Unit

(GPU). The IPUv3EX provides comprehensive support for connectivity to displays and cameras. The VPU supports hardware

encoding and decoding of MPEG-4, H.263, H.264 and many more standards. The GPU serves 3D and 2Dacceleration in

hardware. The board‘s memory capabilities (NAND Flash, DDR2) and numerous interfaces like Ethernet, HDMI,4xUSB

and USB-OTG turn the SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51 into the ultimate development board for future high-end embedded devices.

    Hi Firat,

As a fellow amature astronomer, I would be interested in following your design/progress if you win.  I am working on a similar project for lightning photography.

    Thanks

    DAB

    Hi DAB,

Thank you very much. Astronomy is one of the things that i have much liked to deal with. However, i have been far of it since for a long time. With the help of this kind of project, i may return to interest of it again. Lightning photography ? Wow! It is a great job that can be done. One needs to be patient to take such kind of pictures of those great natural events. I would like to view the pictures you have taken so far, if it is possible. Please post your project here so that i can be able to vote for it.

    Best regards,

If I win, I would like to build Low-cost Contactless payment terminal running linux OS  using the SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51 board interfaced to Touchscreen with GUI(Graphical user interface) of cash register connected through ethernet with a transaction host is linked to bank account. The SBC-I.MX51SBC-I.MX51 will also be connected through USB with an NFC (Near field communication) reader to be able to make contactless payment.

    Best regards,,

    Hi All,

This board would be perfect to start the development of a language studio equipment. My goal is to replace the more than 20 years old one in the school of my doughters. My ideai is a linux based system supporting audio and video materials to be streamed from the teacher's desk to about 20 student nodes. The students nodes are equipped with touch sensitive monitors so not only listening is supported. Interactive excersizes, tests, could be made. Materials prepared in advance could be used in the afternoon individually and later supervised by the teacher. The strong graphical capabilities of the I.MX platform makes it ideal for this task

    Best regards,

    Laszlo

If I were to be the winner, I would replace my wife's old, dying computer.  Turn her workstation power consumption from 300W+ to less than 50W.  Saving the environment on shmuck at a time!

In times of great peril and uncertainty a hero must arise. Through years of arduous mental and physical conditioning I have honed my body to a razor's edge, and I am prepared to combat crime and injustice wherever it may appear.

I have spent months developing a stealthy, nimble flying machine, within which I will patrol the skies over my fair hometown, defending her citizens against the the predators who lurk in her shadows. Only one thing is missing to make my patrolcraft skyworthy: a Bluetechnix SBC-iMX51 board to drive the glass cockpit.

The audio input will allow me to triangulate upon the innocents as they cry for help. The camera input will provide multi-spectrum image capabilities, allowing me to search the shadows for ne'er-do-wells lying in ambush. The GPU support will give me real time rendering of three dimensional terrain and building information culled from Google Earth and USGS survey data, all of which can be compressed down to fit in the ample 2GB on-board flash memory. The SD card slot will allow me to take my trusty artificially intelligent operational sidekick (AIOS) with me from my headquarters into the patrol craft, and the iMX.51 processor will allow her to respond to my inquiries with lightning speed.

Either that, or maybe some kind of video game. I don't know yet.

    Mike

Since it has low power consumption, lots of I/O and is fairly powerful, I would see if I could make an interesting environmental monitor. Since it should be well suited to being remotely situated, connected to various sensors and whilst capable of locally processing data and/or serving content.

Rather than things such as temperature and wind speed etc, I'd be more concerned with measurements such as the earth's magnetic field and radiation levels. The latter is particularly topical for obvious reasons, and the former since it's been predicted that we are entering a period of increased geomagnetic activity. So, ideally I'd like to try and construct a proton precession magnetometer, although this may turn out to be quite a challenge. However, measuring background radiation would be simpler and there are perhaps simpler instruments for measuring the earth's magnetic field to a lower resolution.
