Freescale Semiconductor has strengthened their 8bit 8pin solutions with the MC9S08QD4, based on the popular S08 architecture.
The MC9S08QD4 takes advantage of the 9S08 low power architecture, but for the first time in the low end S08 family, the MC9S08QD4 operates between 2.7V to 5.5V. It delivers numerous advantages for the embedded system designer.
Pin Compatibility / Package Options
The MC9S08QD4 is pin compatible with the recently launched MC9RS08KA, and offers an ideal migration path for MC9RS08KA2 customers looking for additional functionality. The MC9S08QD4 is also pin compatible with the MC9S08QG family. Both the MC9RS08KA2 and MC9S08QG8 are also available from Farnell.
To give flexibility and choice to the designer, there will be two different package variants supported across the MC9S08QD family. It is supported in 8pin PDIP and 8pin NB SOIC.
Feature Set
The MC9S08QD4 offers a tightly integrated powerful feature set for such a low pin count device. The key features on the MC9S08QD products are detailed below. The highlights include integrated Flash memory programmable in circuit, Analogue to Digital converter, dual 16bit Timer modules. It also has an Internal Clock Source module with precision trimming providing 0.2% resolution with only 2% deviation across full operating temperature and voltage.
Features:
- S08 CPU
- 4k Bytes Flash derivatives
- 256 Bytes RAM
- 4ch, 10bit Analogue to Digital Converter
- 2 x 16bit Timers - 1x2Ch, 1x1Ch
- Internal Clock Source module, with precision trimming
- Package Options - 8 SOIC, 8 PDIP
In addition there’s a range of system security features including Low Voltage Detection, Power On Reset, Watchdog and security features for both Flash and RAM.
By providing a high level of system integration in a small package for the right price, it means customers continue to save after the component purchase because fewer external system components are required, reducing design time, and lessening the probability of overall board quality issues.
Development Support
Freescale also offers an excellent technical support package ensuring everything is in place to allow the designer to migrate easily from the initial evaluation of the product through to production. There is a low cost demo board available (Part Number: DEMO9S08QD4) with debug capability, an integrated USB-to-BDM interface to reduce development costs and making it easy to use. This offers outstanding value for money at a special introductory price of US $59.
The In Circuit Emulation (ICE) and Background Debug Module (BDM) provide powerful on-chip development and debug support to the designer. These provide true best in class performance for an 8 or 16pin MCU, offering single wire debugging and a full emulation interface complete with Trace Capability, and Trigger Modes. This provides a real benefit in eliminating the need for expensive emulation tools.
The tools package also consists of CodeWarrior Special Edition Software (CWS_HC08-SE), which includes a free 16Kbyte code version of the CodeWarrior Integrate Development Environment (including an initialization tool).
