PAN1740 Series - Revolutionizing Bluetooth Smart with a 4.9 mA Current Consumption in Tx or Rx!

A revolution is underway in Bluetooth Smart (Bluetooth Low Energy) to dramatically shrink power budgets for battery powered applications. Panasonic’s “nanopower” family of 2nd generation Bluetooth Smart modules reduces transmit and receive current consumption by more than 66% when compared to the current generation of Bluetooth Smart devices and nearly a 90% reduction from Bluetooth Classic devices. Most significant is that these current reductions have been achieved without range reduction, without transmit power reduction and without changes to the Bluetooth specification.

The NEW PAN1740 is the next-generation “nanopower”  Bluetooth Smart module for the Internet of Everything. With reduced form factor, significantly lower power consumption and embedded software stack and profile low system cost products can be realised – e.g. consumer electronics, wireless sensors, cable replacements. The cost-engineered solution is based on a System-on-Chip solution.

The 9.0 x 9.5 x 1.8 mm footprint of PAN1740 makes it one of the smallest Bluetooth Smart module available containing a fully shielded case, integrated 16 MHz crystal and 32.768 kHz crystal, DC/DC circuit, passives and chip antenna as SMD package. The power consumption of only 4.9 mA GFSK in transmit or receive mode allows the use of coin cell batteries and reduces battery requirements up to 50% when compared to current generation Bluetooth Smart devices. PAN1740 is working with a power supply of 2.35 to 3.3 V and fulfilling industrial temperature range of -40 to +85°C. With 0 dBm transmit power and high receiver sensitivity of -93 dBm PAN1740 reaches a range of 20 m. Interface to the host are possible via GPIO, UART, SPI, I2C, 3-axis QD and ADC.

Panasonic’s unique features for PAN1740 are main frequency calibration up to 1 ppm @ 2.4 GHz, pre-programmed Bluetooth/MAC address and a precise high performance crystal sleep clock.

In the production Panasonic calibrates the 16 MHz crystal and write the calibration data in the OTP header (32 kb available). This provides best performance and a stable frequency. Each Bluetooth device must have a unique MAC address which is provided from the IEEE. Since this may lead to additional costs and registration effort for customers Panasonic burns a unique address into the OTP header from Panasonic’s database. Customers do not need to take care of the two steps in their production. Since PAN1740 is a low energy device and the key functionalities are the sleep functions with just a few μA current draw Panasonic supports also a 32.768 kHz crystal clock. Therefore no external components are needed and there are no hidden costs.

PAN1740 comes with a complete software development platform, which includes a qualified Bluetooth Smart single-mode stack on chip. Multiple Bluetooth Smart profiles for consumer wellness, sport, fitness, security and proximity applications are supplied as standard, while additional customer profiles can be developed and added as needed.

Panasonic’s cost engineering lowers external component count and the application BOM. It reduces development effort and time to market. PAN1740 is qualified to the Bluetooth 4.1 standard – FCC, IC, CE (R&TTE) certifications are pending. Panasonic’s designer friendly Easy-to-Use (ETU) development kits reduce design efforts and critical time to market.
