STM32 evaluation boards provide complete development platforms for the STM32 Value line. They provide flexible and open design solutions for demonstrating device capabilities, evaluating features and peripherals. Depending on the model, they include an STM32 microcontroller with a high-performance ARM CortexTm-M3 core, full speed USB 2.0 interface (device or host/OTG), Ethernet, CAN 2.0A/B compliant interface, I²C, SPI, USART with smartcard support and internal SRAM and Flash memory. The evaluation boards include a complete range of hardware features for evaluating microcontroller performance and starting development of a wide range of applications.

The STM32 value line Discovery evaluation board is based on an STM32F100RB and includes ST-Link embedded debug tool interface, LEDs and push buttons, essentially a low-cost tool that includes all that is needed to get started.

A number of ready-to-run application firmware examples are available on www.st.com/stm32-discovery to support development & quick evaluation using extension header for connection to other boards or devices.

The 'Getting Started' user manual (UM0919) is attached to this article, highlighting hardware and layout, detailing the featured microcontroller, showing usage of the Embedded ST-Link integrated on the STM32VL-Discovery, programming / debugging external STM32 applications as well as power-up information.

Also attached is the Application Note (AN3268) providing descriptions for firmware demonstration, with examples covering features of the 'value line', folders with libraries & drivers.

Features include:

  • STM32F100RB microcontroller with 128KB Flash, 8KB RAM in 64-pin LQFP
  • Self powered by USB cable between PC and STM32 Value line Discovery
  • Designed to be powered by USB or an external supply of 5 V or 3.3 V
  • Can supply target application with 5V and 3V
  • On-board ST-Link with

- USB interface for programming and debugging

- selection mode switch to use the kit as a standalone ST-Link (with SWD connector)

  • Extension header for all QFP64 I/Os
  • Large number of free, downloadable ready-to-use software examples
  • On-board ST-Link with selection mode switch to use the kit as a stand-alone ST-Link (with SWD connector)
  • Two user LEDs (green and blue)
  • One user push button
  • Extension header for all QFP64 I/Os for quick connection to prototyping board or easy probing

Benefits:

  • Discover STM32 with STM32 Value line, including 128KB Flash, 8KB RAM in a 64-pin LQFP
  • Immediate plug-and-play demonstration
  • Adapts the demo to the future application environment
  • Non-intrusive debug with the in-circuit debugger present on STM32 Value line Discovery

     - The kit can be used as an ST-link for your own board.

  • Ideal for prototyping and easy probing

-Enable quick connection to a prototyping board

  • Fast startup, accelerate your developments

System requirements

● Windows PC (2000, XP, Vista)

● USB type A to mini-B cable

Development toolchain

● Atollic, TrueSTUDIORegistered (including the free LiteTrueSTUDIORegistered)

● IAR, Embedded WorkbenchRegistered for ARM

● Keil, MDK-ARMTM

Demonstration software is preloaded in the board's Flash memory for easy demonstration of the device peripherals in stand-alone mode

Also referred to here is the STM32100B-EVAL - a complete hardware evaluation platform, implementing the full range of device peripherals and features.

Other supporting tools include operating systems and solution stacks, eg. STM32 embedded firmware

STM32 firmware library: complete packages consisting of device drivers for all the standard device peripherals.

Each device driver includes a set of functions covering full peripheral functionality.

STM32 Class B norm certification self-test routines: a full set of ready to-use self-test routines for home-appliance certification under EN/IEC 60335-1 Class B norm (functional safety).

STM32 motor control software: complete 3-phase motor control library supporting PMSM motors in sensor and sensorless mode and AC induction motors in sensor mode, and a patented single-shunt algorithm. STM32 CEC software: this complete software supported by the STM32100B-EVAL evaluation board provides an implementation of CEC high-level protocol and full demonstration software.
