    What would be neat to see (don't know if it exists, but writing it here so it cannot be patented if it doesn't already exist!) a type of connector such as the above, but where the center pin is _isolated_ in the unmated condition. In other words, some mechanical action when mated, that causes the center pin to make electrical contact. One way to do that, would be to introduce a magnet into the structure, that moves a piece of the mechanism towards the mating connector. Another way would be to use the twisting/tightening force to push, or even latch, the center connection. 

    Another nice technique could be to use a sensor (perhaps optical, or proximity based, or electrical conductivity based (for instance when mating) to provide a signal to the circuitry.

    The benefit of all of the above, would be that the electrical connection would be isolated from accidental finger touch, until the connector was mated. That could be useful where high power RF is expected on the connector, or where the circuitry doesn't have a lot of ESD protection.

    No idea what the market for such a feature would be though.
