TE Connectivity – PE Series Relays

The PE Relay Series from TE Connectivity is a small, powerful and sensitive 5A PCB relay with 1c/o contacts in either un-polarised monostable or bistable designs.

With a footprint of 20 x 10mm and a height of only 10mm above the PCB, the PE is a power relay of a size usually reserved for signal switching relays. This is possible due to the innovative design of the PE relay.

Traditional relay design incorporates a return spring and separate armature design, but the PE power relay dispenses with the armature return spring, instead the switching spring which conducts the switched current and is fitted with the moving contacts also performs the function of the armature return spring. The design of the actuator and its connection method to the switching spring ensures that the mechanical coupling of the relay can transfer power in both a pulling and pushing direction.

The main function of a relay is to switch power and despite its minimal dimensions the PE is capable of switching 5A at 250Vac and has been approved by UL and VDE, in ambient temperatures of up to 85 oC.

The demand for PCB relays of low power consumption is greater than ever and the PE with its un-polarised 200mW nominal power requirement thus comes close to the ideals of the PC board designer.

In addition the PE is available as a single coil bistable relay. The advantage of bistable relays is that no power is used after switching, thus saving power and reducing the relay temperature. Additionally, the contacts will remain in position in the event of a power failure.

These advantages make bistable relays ideal for the following applications:

  • Where low power consumption is important, e.g. Battery operated devices
  • Where heat dissipation is critical. e.g., where there are many relays closely packed on the PCB
  • Where the relay is to be energised for a long time
  • If the relay has to remain operated in the event of a power failure
  • Where only pulse control of the relay is possible

Available with either AgNi90/10 contacts for general applications, gold plated contact for low level switching or AgSnO contacts for high inrush loads the PE series has the solution for a wide variety of applications.
