Many systems in todays world have applications that need a high level of power for only short periods of time and then go through long states where only a minimal amount of power is needed. Common applications include motors, pumps, printer heads, robotics, etc. In cases such as these a power supply capable of delivering a high peak load when needed can be a huge benefit if it is sized both for the nominal load that is required and also the peak power amount.
Attached is an article by Ken Peterson of XP Power where he helps to outline some of the benefits of using a peak rated supply and what information is needed in order to make the right selection for your power supply.
