Designing an element14 Community 'badge'

cstanton

I don't believe I'm quite at the level to design a DEF CON challenge badge, but maybe I can design an add-on for it.

There is a 'standard' for add-ons for badges, called SAO (someone let me know if there's a better link for the latest standard...).

So I figured it'd be good to design one, that you can make/solder up yourself that may be able to do something, or at least, light up.

I'm interested in your inputs for design, functionality, and creation ideas to get this started.

And I should probably choose which software to design it up in... then maybe we can give some away for you to attach to the next conference badge you get.

I hadn't forgotten this lovely design :) I'm also going to not so sneakily move the blog over to this group since it's PCB related and deserves attention. Have you shared the files so I could open it up…

Instead of the round format used with Rosie, the art could be cut out as described on the puppy badge here using KiCad and surface mounted parts placed on the back of the SAO.

The battery and switch could be removed from the circuit.  The most important thing is that it have LEDs and blink :-)

I don't think I posted the KiCad files but you are welcome to them.  I'll see if I can put them on github tonight and will post a link here.

    Try these links to github:

    Rosie

    Puppy

As is probably evident, while I can often get things to work I don't really know what I'm doing.  It looks like I was fooling around with Rosie a bit after I published on element14 and there were some extraneous files so I removed them before placing on github.  It seems to be working, but let me know if you have a problem.  There appear to be extraneous files with the Puppy badge too but I put the whole thing on github.  I've never sent it to a PCB fab so it is untested. Have fun with your project, I'm interested in how it turns out.
