XBMC running on the Raspberry Pi, everyone's first use

Let's face it, we will use the Raspberry Pi to stream media to out television. It is satisfying to know we can get this started as soon as we receive our Model A/Bs.

Using the XBMC (original XBOX Media Center "dashboard" that has been ported) will make the process easy.

I foresee a Raspberry Pi app store right around the corner.

Is there any real need for a dedicated distribution like RaspBMC or OpenELEC just to get XBMC running? I can run it as a program on Win7 and Mac OS X, would it not be available as a package via yum or apt or similar on the main Fedora / Debian etc distros?

unless anyone compiles xbmc and provide it as an rpm/deb there will be no xbmc in any repo.
OpenELEC for example is a distro around XBMC which includes only needed stuff for a running XBMC, so its much smaller then a normal distro and is better optimized to run XBMC.
