Raspberry Pi - Hardware Flaws and Fixups?

Several people have commented on the hardware design of the Raspberry Pi.  Some are buried in other topics so please post your comments here.  I'll try my best to answer questions about the design decisions we made.  The Raspberry Pi is not perfect, never will be.  I've always found that perfect designs have a habit of never getting built, engineers are always a bit guilty of that, but I had Eben phoning/emailing me every day wanting to know when it would be finished.  Also, one persons perfection is another persons nightmare.

 

e14 is the home for engineers so please contribute to make Raspberry Pi better.

    Cheers John.  I must say I'm surprised at "10,000".  I wouldn't like to bet that the ones I've seen would last even 100 insertion cycles.

     

    Perhaps the rating is for perfectly axis-aligned insertion and removal.  In the real world, USB leads are wiggled laterally and place stress on the socket mounts.

    Remember that Pete has said that he chose a "high quality" one that has through hole attachments. This connector is soldered with pins THROUGH the board. This in contrast to the flaky ones that some consumer products use: SMD only, so they come off after a few mating cycles or a small bump to the cable.

    The Raspberry Pi passed its EMC tests with flying colours!  Woohoo!

     

    And Liz says that passing compliance tests without the need for a metalized case is "entirely down to Pete, who does a superb job", so a big congratulations to Pete here for a job very well done! image image image

    I'd also like to pass on congrats to Pete Lomas for such an excellent result. I know very little about this sort of thing myself, but reading and learning from others that do this seems to be pretty impressive. Nicely done sir image

    Well done. So now it's just paperwork, then waiting for production and shipment?

    How many RPi/week are going to be manufactured? Oh, that's now an HW thing... XD

    Only some minor suggestions:

    - I don't mind having a slightly larger pcb board, that will give some room to align the eth and usb connector.

    - Perhaps replacing the lan9512 with a lan9513, so you have an extra usb slot for storage or wifi.

    - Vertical usb connectors instead of horizontal (so you can fit 3 next to each other...)

     

    It is unbelieveble how much you could fit on that small pcb...

    Would it be possible to connect the data pins of the power microusb so that a data cable may be used to connect the pi to a desktop computer (software permitting)? Would this need a more advanced USB hub and therefore be more expensive?  It could be very useful in the educational environment where a student needs to power the device and also transfer files between the schools network and the device

    Yes, that'd be a nice feature....

     

    However it's not as simple as simply connecting a few wires.

     

    The SOC apparently has  USB-host circuitery. I don't think it has an USB-device module. So there simply isn't anything to connect those datalines to. :-(

     

    Possibly the USB module is capable of doing both device and host. However there is just one USB connection. So you have to chose where to connect it. It has been connected to the USB hub/lan chip, so now the flexibility is lost.

     

    Hans, the lan 9513 is 64 pins and therefore physically a lot bigger. Probably more expensive too.

    Now that people have actually started receiving the boards so the design in final, is the schematic close to being posted?  I looked around again in various likely places just now, but haven't spotted it yet.

    actually, the design may not be quite final yet.  Liz said: "Happily, we’ve found it doesn’t need a shielded enclosure to reach Class B, although it will require a (very minimal) redesign." http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/978, page 3, April 10, 2012 at 7:04 pm.

     

    It hasn't been announced when such a change might be implemented, but probably better sooner rather than later, given the large production runs planned, perhaps along with a change to fix the SD card voltage issue.
