Does config.txt do anything?

Since I received my Pi 2 months ago I have been trying at intervals to get a decent display on my 15" LCD monitor on CVS. The screen is 4:3 and is 1024*768 pixels and the display I get is 14:9 with a black border at top and bottom and is a few pixels too wide.

I can succesfully edit config.txt, except for the overscan which does not accept a negative number such as -20, but when I reboot the picture is just the same. Can anyone help?

On HDMI the picture is fine.

I am perservering because the Pi is a tool with great potential and spending a few months getting to really make it hum will be time well spent.

Indeed! Such blatant disregard for the Laws of the Universe could seriously weaken the fabric of spacetime, and then who knows what could come in from the other side. A and Not A cannot be allowed simultaneously, it's playing with fire. There couild be a Pi Apocalypse!

Hey Morgaine its all about Quantum cats or something. A and NOT A is the norm all the time. Well unless you are looking at it and then well then normal is norm. Its a 2 slit fact of life. I think its in the GNU/Emacs HOWTOS or whatever.

Its a Wave nahhhhhhhh its a particle Whoooosh wow surfs up.
