Camera Comp Rules - Please confirm?

I was having a look at some of the entries, which are all great ideas for photos!  BUT the rules and regulations, outlined here: http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-54371/l/raspberry-pi-camera-board-photography-competition-rules-regulation?ICID=picamera-module-doc

Does not state whether or not modified images are allowed.

 

From my understanding, modified images should not be allowed / eligible for the competition.

 

Is that correct?

 

and what are the rules for modified boards and sensors?

  • what are the rules for modified firmware ?  like the newer firmware that doesn't upscale a 1920x1080 image to 2592x1944 with the associated loss of quality ?

     

    or using an additional macro lens - i.e. no modification to the board or sensor at all!

     

    the only bit in the rules that seems relevant is that the picture must be taken with an RPi camera board - nothing to say you can't use different command line options to raspistill, or photoshop the image or whatever.

     

    All sorts of post processing will already have been done in the GPU (stuff like AWB), should the playing field be levelled by only allowing the raw sensor data before the GPU or anything else has the chance to interfere ?

     

    There's some absolutely amazing stuff being done with the camera, like http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/4170 and no modifications... To me that's the whole point, can you be creative with the RPi Camera ?

    I would challenge you to show me any image that hasn't been modified.

    I can take pics with my Nikon in raw format, and then manipulate them to correct for lots of things before turning them into a jpg.

    If they are taken as a jpg, the camera already manipulates the raw sensor image for various things inc noise reduction.

    Some cameras do High Dynamic Range where two or more images are taken and the resulting single image has improved dynamic range.

     

    Most published photos are manipulated to improve some aspect, and that may be simply removing a blemish, or a light reflection in the wrong place.

    I've been guilty of fixing a few blemishes on the subject as well.

     

    Could you include stitching together images in this category?

     

    The other thing is how will you know?

    Unless someone has obviously montaged something into the image that wasn't there originally (ie my daugher turned two garden ornaments into 10ft high items, and put them into the photo), I can't see how you would know.

     

    For images that use the image sensor, but may have changed the lens or IR filter, then its still using the hardware supplied.

    I certainly don't speak for E14 in any way, but here's my 2 cents.

     

    This competition appears to be about as informal as you can get.

    There don't seem to be any rules prohibiting E14 employees from

    participating, for example, and the winner is to be selected by a

    public vote which is inherently subjective.  You can submit as many

    entries as you like.  The prize is unspecified, some possible future

    RPi accessories in 2013, but as far as I know, there are no announced

    plans for new RPi accessories in 2013.

     

    The competition appears to be aimed at creating some buzz around

    the camera launch, and probably to get existing forum members

    motivated to do something creative and increase their forum participation.

     

    So I would think that E14 wants to maximize the number of submissions,

    and the wow factor of the submissions, rather than discouraging anyone

    by means of strict rules.  This is an engineering website, so presumably

    they would be very happy to see all sorts of creative engineering that

    shows what can be done,  Go ahead and wow us.  Don't hold back.

    Exactly, I think the whole point is to go for it and create something really outstanding.

    I think as long as you explain how you did it then that's fair game.

     

    All the more so if you managed to do the processing on the Pi it's self ...eat your own dog food and all that image

  • OK.  I understand now:  as long as the raw data comes from the raspberry pi camera module, the end result does not matter (with respect to entries and rules).

     

    I was just a little unsure.  Thank you all for confirming!
