thesis project

simon.ganne
simon.ganne over 7 years ago

Hi everyone, i'm in my fifth year industrial science, and next year I need to accomplish a thesis project. At the end of this year I need to find an interesting project, something that has to do with fysics, math, mechanics and electronics. of course its almost impossible to have a project that has to do with all of those subjects so you can leave some out. Has anyone some bright ideas? I've been looking but I have not found what I need yet.

Create yourself a relay computer.. That covers three aspects..

    maths - computer language

    electronics - self explanitory

    mechanics - relays are mechanical

    just a thought image

    Hi Simon,

    Build a weather station.

You get electronics, math, science and mechanics all in one shot.

They are easy to design, construct and analyzing the data can be loads of fun.

Just think about all of the data analysis and AI algorithms you can play with.

true. An anemometer is a nice mechanical device. Maybe go fancy on the air pressure meter?

Our anemometers use ultrasonics between three heads to sense the speed and direction.

There is an element of all three aspects involved.

Anything robotic will combine all four.  For example, a cake decorating machine that spells out "I love science" in yellow icing.

I couldn't help thinking of an old joke:

One day an elementary school teacher decided to try a new exercise: each student would say what his or her father did for a living and spell it.  The first child said: "My dad's a doctor... D-O-C-T-O-R."  The second said: "My dad's a policeman: P-O-L... I-C-E... M-A-N."  The third child said: "My dad's a physicist... uh... F-I-Z... I mean P-H-I-Z-Z... uh..." A fourth child interrupted and said: "My dad's a bookie B-O-O-K-I-E and I'll give you ten to one he can't spell physicist!"

    Hello simon.ganne,

How about an Automatic Solar Tracker System. This is a project where a solar panel tracks the sun light to get the most power possible at any given time (of course, except at night). There are few different ways to implement it, but I say your best bet for a thesis is to use GPS to get an accurate position of the sun any time of the year and at any location.

There is a clever way to do it with 4-photoresistors but I think this wouldn't use as much Physics/Math as the GPS way of doing it.

    Luis

It is a good idea but someone in my class is already making just that. Someone who has another idea?

    An electronically controlled winch?

Fysics: calculate what weight it can lift and how high it can lift it, ...

    Mechanic: gearbox

Math: calculate gearbox, motor power, required power, momentum, speed, ....

Electronics: motor driver and controller. Sensors.

Thanks a lot for all the good comments but none of them were approved by my teachers image. Someone other idea's? it's important that it's not too expensive and it has to be a bit innovative.

Do you have examples of projects from your fellow students that were accepted by the teachers?
