How do you organize your SD cards?

rsc
rsc 8 months ago

I have many raspberry pi projects, and they use version 3B, 3B+, 4, 5 hardware, and when I'm developing, I may have several versions of firmware loaded on SD cards.  I sometimes loose track of what version of software is on a card.  How do you organize your SD cards and tell what development software is installed on each one without having to load it up and look for markers in the files?  If I have a label maker available, I add tags on top.

For a while I was using a spreadsheet to keep track of SD cards, dev boards, etc.

I think Apple Notes would probably work well for those with Macs and iOS. I keep much of my life organized that way now.

I don't have a lot of SD cards anymore. Several have burned up with overuse (mainly in security cameras), some are in audio projects, some are permanently assigned to devices - mostly in use where there's not too much guessing what's going on, and they stay put.

However, now it's getting trickier keeping track of external backup drives and storage...
They all have stickers on them to say what they are, but it could be better.

so I'm interested in seeing what others suggest too.

I tend to label the adapter as it has more space. Also because I've experienced labels on some microSD cards peeling off and getting stuck inside the card slots. So if necessary, ink on the the SD card to reference it to an adapter, which then has the label.

imageYes, I have colored dots on some, and of course I don't know anymore what the dots meant.  I've thought about making a small clip holder that has an NFC chip in it so I can put configuration on the NFC chip.  If you see SD cards with embedded NFC chips in the future, I invented it here first!

labels handwritten pieces of a cut up stick on mailing label, stored in a sealed plastic container that originally had baby food......I'm so not ashamed :-)

my Pi SD cards stay in the associated PI

the labeled SDs are usually SD cards for WTV020-SD and DFplayer sound modules

That's a nice little holder, and looks like there's enough space to add small labels for each card.

Thanks javagoza .  I used a lot of those BANDC uSD card holders so I had to keep a spreadsheet but since the 10 slots are numbered I only had to label each card holder and they were easy to reference.  I like the compact credit card size better than the larger holders.

Labels on the plastic case that came with them.  After that... nothing.  The others roam free in a Ziploc.

I had wanted to buy a handful of cheap small micro sd cards just for the sound modules and music speakers, making it easy to spot their functions... but at the price, it seems like a 5-pack of 32GB sd cards is only pennies more than the tiny capacity ones. Maybe buying a set from a make in a different colour would work Laughing

I have a mixed up mess of containers and locations for storing FLASH memory - some commercial, some 3D printed, none are labelled well. Here are some that are nearby...

You can see Pi cards are well represented in this selection.

It is somewhere on my bucket list to figure out a decent storage method for the dozens of cards I have.

Another big question is how many devices do you have that use SD cards?
