Would you Bake Your Own Raspberry Pi?

I like pie, maybe it's because I'm from Yorkshire in England.

There're a good number of different Raspberry Pi's available now, but I wonder would you bake your own?

With the Compute module you can kinda make your own Raspberry Pi, it has an additional board but it does mean you can just produce your own PCB and plug it in.

Or are you happy with the Raspberry Pi as it is, how would it be different if you're doing one project as opposed to many, many copies? Or maybe something else entirely.

You can now use the Raspberry Pi Customization Service if you want to bake your own Raspberry Pi!

While the Pi has gotten better, the choice of power supply limits it. What would be nice is a proper switch mode regulator that can handle 12v at the least (24v industrial would be better). With many of…

Here here. mcb1 is correct. The power regulation causes so many headaches. Eben Upton are you listening? Clem

Making your shields are a doddle!

Just ask DAB about my efforts.

The basic Rpi is fine for its intended purpose.

Once you get into custom solutions, you quickly become constrained by software updates.

So unless you have deep pockets, keep it simple.

Yes as shown here the Pi compute is an £150 original Pi B still with guts missing and with £30 plus all your design/productioncosts  per unit you must really need a Pi in your design to use it!

With many of the hats sitting quite low, adding an extra board to do power is not possible, so onboard is the only realistic option.

I find Pi Compute very useful in many automation projects. Our "modest" miniature railway project would had too many extra components with "regular" RasPi.

I totally agree with you. But I make my own when I need special solutions (like the one I am doing now). IMHO, this is a separate factor from the idea of making thousands or not. Maybe that is faster - if able, if market exist etc. - to make thousands with a strong and reliable base already working adding the "plus" that makes the difference instead of make a totally custom device.

    Enrico

P.S. As we have extensively discussed in other places, the PI Computer is more a non-board than something really useful.

As the core to a solution, I would leave as is. Any compute board that has the SPI, I2C and a selection of GPIO lends itself to use as it if the price is right. With the PI, Arduino, LaunchPad etc this criteria is met. Now if I want to make thousands then thats a different story but in general, it is good the way it is
