What would be your one positive commentary and your one negative commentary regarding the RoadTest Review?

 

rscasny post Do You Know Enough or Are You Good Enough To Be a RoadTester? motivated me to post this discussion. After reading RS's post a flood of experiences resulted in me responding to his post. After thinking about it, I wonder what the other members think about the RoadTest. What do they like? What don't they like?

 

Responding to this discussion post is not limited to individuals that have been awarded a RoadTest Review. My goal is to read posts from the perspectives of all participants. That includes the people that haven't even submitted an application.

 

Share your experience. I like this. I hate that. The limit is you only get one positive and one negative. I look forward to maybe having an aha moment.

  • As a person who finds it hard to limit his verbiage, I accept your challenge of providing one positive and one negative:

    • Positive
      • It allows interested parties (such as myself) to potentially access equipment of interest without needing to shell out big bucks, while providing an ideal motivation to study the equipment thoroughly in a time-bounded way with the two-month deadline.
    • Negative
      • The scheduling can be a bit wonky at times, due to delays in procuring items, shipping, or due to enrollment timeframe changes which causes the anticipated RoadTest review time window to be pushed further and further back. This can make it hard to ensure that I am still in roughly-the-same circumstance at the point the selections have been made compared to when I had applied.

    Positive:

    Get a chance to work with interesting items that I might not normally be able to do.  It’s a good opportunity to expand on skills.  It feels like I’m doing it on behalf of others in the community so its a chance to give back to those who have freely doled help out.

     

    Negative:

    Timing has been the biggest negative I’ve experienced.  Whether its multiple RoadTests I’d want to have a crack at occurring simultaneously, or where the timescales slip and suddenly a plan starts to go out the window.  TBH, I haven’t really felt negative about anything to do with the roadtest programme: even timing issues are just ‘circumstance’ and I’ve been around the block enough times to know how to adapt and deal with it.
