TTi PSA2701T review: Brian Stone, Cooma Radio Network Services

It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to demo this new product.

I will try to aim my review of PSA2701T the spectrum analyser rather than the features etc of the palm unit as I think most technical people are familiar with a PDA.

At first glance the PSA2701T was rather easy to turn on and configure for general signal strength measurement. As a Two Way Radio Technician measuring signal strength would be the main function of the unit. The secondary function would possibly be interference hunting. This unit would be much easier to carry around.

The menus for the settings and options were very good and in line with most spectrum analysers that I have used. As far as technical performance I could not fault the PSA2701T. I tested it on 460 MHz and on 928 MHz which is around what we use.

I really liked the way the unit can store images and copy to bitmap for historical records or for forwarding. This can be particularly handy when referring interference issue’s on to the authorities. It’s as simple as store, attach and send (in an email).

When it comes to possible improvements the SMA would be first on the list as you may already know it may not last very long.

The other possible improvement would be serial and/or USB port for communication with radio equipment this could be very handy for technicians who need to configure radio/ telemetry equipment. If an installer can do signal measurements and program/communicate with their product this unit it would eliminate a laptop. From an installer point of view this would lighten the load especially when climbing ladders etc.

Finally I would like to thankyou for the opportunity to test such a neat little unit and I have no hesitation to recommend it to anyone who is in the market for a hand held spectrum analyser, especially if they use a PDA anyway.

    Hi Brian

I am please to learn that the PSA exceeded your expectations for a low cost spectrum Analyser. The PSA has been adopted by a significant number of Radio Systems engineers. Most significantly for maintaining the UK Tetra network for the fire police and ambulance service.

You identified the SMA connector as a possible weakness in the product. We are aware of this and we recommend that users fit a sacrificial SMA adapter to the PSA. In many cases this is a flexible test lead terminated in the connector required. Alternatively a simple Mail to femail SMA can be fitted to protect the PSA SMA. These can be purchased from Farnell.
