image detector wanted

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi all,

I am looking for an image detector, (camera) which can detect from 220nm to 1200nm.

a bar image detector is acceptable  (like what is used in scanners) or a square image detector like what is in web cameras is also acceptable.

Can anyone assist me with a part number or a manufacturer who can assist me in finding such a part?

    Hi Leoh,

That's a wide range, you probably want to consult a specialist manufacturer like Hamamatsu. It likely won't be cheap.

For a reduced range (400 to around 1100nm) then a line CCD could be used which are cheap since they were used in PoS scanners (see Toshiba, Sony) but are bare sensors - not difficult to get a signal out of them, but for a decent signal and data aquisition you need fairly complex circuitry which would involve an electronic engineer to design (i.e. more money than an off-the-shelf camera probably).

What about a camera with a powerful lens on the front?

    Hi Andy!

Hehe it is nm (wavelength), not mm (focal length) : ) Or at least that's what I think Leoh means, due to another post where a spectrometer is mentioned (it is not mentioned here).

The text needs zooming on your screen : )

I did read Nanometre but thought it was just really small objects. Yes wavelength makes much more sense, late night yesterday!

I doubt if you can find one, the sensitivity of silicon where most camera sensors are made of is from 400-1000nm.

    try this:

Sensitivity on 220nm and >1100 are low, for that you will need InGaAs. And it is very easy to interface to any mcu

These are the people you need to speak to, they made the Hubble's sensors and do a lot of exotic devices. Be aware though, that you have a pretty tight constraint, so expect a price to match. If you get any free samples out of them, I'd love to know how!
