What was the name of the game?

What was the name of the problem solving game to free the mouse?

During the nineties I played a computer game that had you release a mouse (i think) from a cage by using a specific set of parts to open the cage. Balloons floating up, being pierced by arrow, conveyor belts moving steel balls, things dropping with a host of other functions all combined to free the animal (again, I think).

I just watched my son-in-law work a problem in the video game Final Fantasy Seven Remake. Watching him play, doesn't interest me, it fired long dormant brain cells recalling images of problem solving using building components in a video game format. The computer game wasn't the big three dimensional formats that exists today.

The game intent was to solve a problem and then it would allow you to advance to another board where there would be another more complex problem. There was no hint section to advance. You had to work the problem with the parts you had. If you didn't solve it, you didn't advance. I can't ever remember completing all the game levels but I do recall a number of my friends, not really into computers, loved the problem solving aspect of the game.

I can't recall what the game was called? From my poor description can anyone provide suggestions on the name of the game? From you suggestion maybe I can find some google reference. Does such a beast exists today? I would love to work with my grand daughter at freeing the mouse (that may not have been it) just by placing objects and watching what they do.

That was fast. I honestly could not recall the name. After reading your post I did a google search an sure enough the screen shots were what I recalled. A mouse being released was shown. I fogot about the basket balls bouncing.

My daughter remembered vaguely playing the game when she was very young but didn't recall the name.

Are there any games on the market today that use a similar gaming concept?

Ah TIM! This was my favorite game growing up, so much so that I even considered having this played during preliminary employee interviews image

There are various remakes for iOS and Android, and there was briefly the contraption maker https://www.wired.com/2013/05/contraption-maker/  but I don't know of any similar game that had the same Rube Goldberg-sque idea.

I think the game is an awesome exercise in problem solving. I coach a high school computer club and find students have a difficult time MacGyver'ing solutions to problems. You have a box of parts make it work.

MacGyver was the protagonist in the TV series of the same name, shown to possess a genius-level intellect, proficiency in multiple languages, superb engineering skills, excellent knowledge of applied physics, military training in bomb disposal techniques, and a preference for non-lethal resolutions to conflicts (wikipedia cut & paste).

I was hoping to find some version of the game that is available today to see what the student interest level is regarding problem solving. Thank you for the response. I will look at the link.
