ROADTEST POLL: Would You Be Interesting in Roadtesting a Source Measure Unit?

source measure unit AIM/TTII'm planning a roadtest on this product. I'd like to gauge your interest in roadtesting it.

Here's some information about the product:

SMU4201 is a SMU4000 series source measure unit. It provides class leading performance at a new and affordable price point for a four quadrant SMU. Combining touch screen technology with an intuitive graphical user interface provides a clear and natural flow through the test and measurement process. Integrating a fast and agile, high power four quadrant Voltage/ Current source and advanced precise Voltage/ Current meters in a compact half rack 2U casing, capable of precisely supplying positive and negative voltages, sourcing or sinking power, while simultaneously measuring both current and voltage for I-V characterizing. With high current and power combined with fast measurements and low glitch auto ranging speed, it is the ideal solution for industrial development as well as educational environments, identifying the SMU as the all-in-one solution for simplifying test applications such as battery charging/discharging, I-V characterizing, semiconductor testing and much more.

Here are some product features:

  • Maximum voltage is ±210V, voltage ranges from 20mV to 200V
  • Powerflex technology achieves full instrument output power across the majority of the voltage range
  • 0.015% basic accuracy with 6½ digit resolution
  • High speed, low glitch auto ranging capability
  • Sense terminals for 4 wire operation and guard capabilities
  • User friendly front panel GUI with on screen numeric or graphical results
  • Internally calculated resistance and power measurements
  • User settable bipolar compliance limits, variable slew rate control
  • High voltage safety interlock, user interface password protected, rear panel interlock control
  • Context sensitive help button

This is just the beginning. I think this will be a good year for roadtests.

programmable dc load. Let me see who makes them and I'll ask.

Wow! These roadtests are all an engineers' delight. Reviewing and reviews for any of these would be useful and enjoyable, for anyone technically inclined!! SMU's are (amongst other thing) like a magnifying…

It's like a power supply and voltmeter/ammeter all-in-one. However, it is extremely granular, so that you can (say) apply even a fraction of a microvolt, whereas a normal power supply would be in the tens or hundreds of millivolts. You can use it to either power or act as stimulus for (say) components, although it is not limited to that.

It can be used like a curve tracer if desired, applying a range of voltage (or current) to (say) a transistor of some sort.

It is best explained with this diagram from the datasheet:

It's excellent for seeing how (say) semiconductors behave. Lots of the nice charts in datasheets would require such a SMU device to create.

You can access a very affordable SMU with the Analog Devices ADALM1000 active learning module
You can use it to check the characteristics of diodes, BJTs and MOSFET devices. The ADALM1000 has its limitations, the two SMU channels can only produce 0 to +5V voltage with respect to ground. But by combining both channels you can also sweep the voltage from -2.5 V to +2.5 V
You can use the ADALM1000 to study the electrical characteristics of any component at DC or low frequencies in a voltage range of -5 to +5 V, measuring current from +/- 0.1 to 180 mA, for about 65 EUR. Anytime you need to collect a lot of data to plot or graph performance over time, a programmable SMU is a big help.

I have been able to carry out with the ADALM10000 many of the experiments that I could not do when I was studying due to lack of resources at my University.

That's a fun product to use! And a very valuable experience for students to be able to tweak things and immediately see the effect, compared to trying to figure out things from diagrams alone.
