Would You Be Interested in Roadtesting a Current Mode Control DC/DC converter with Fast Transient Response?

imageI will be roadtesting this product in September. I'd like to get your feeedback, thoughts and interest in this product.

Here are a few facts about the product:

The BD9G500EFJ-EVK-001 uses BD9G500EFJ-LA to output 5V from a 48V input voltage. The input voltage of the BD9G500EFJ-LA is from 7V to 76V and the output voltage is configurable from 1V to 0.97 x VIN V with external resistors. The operating frequency is configurable between 100 kHz and 650 kHz with an external resistor connected to RT pin. This is a current mode control DC/DC converter that provides fast transient response performance and simple phase compensation setup.

Here are a few features of the DC/DC Converter:

  • Wide Input Voltage Range
  • Integrated High-Side MOSFET
  • Current Mode Control
  • Adjustable Frequency
  • Soft Start Function
  • Over Current Protection (OCP)
  • Under Voltage Lockout (UVLO)
  • Thermal Shutdown Protection (TSD)
  • Over Voltage Protection (OVP)
  • HTSOP-J8 package

Here are some documents from the manufacturer:

I am considering adding an adjustable DC Power Supply to the kit, Bench Power Supply

The Rohm simulation tool is quite nice.. it looks like a normal Spice simulator embedded in a browser, with the circuit and probes all set up. There are "spare" probes at the bottom-right : ) As many of…

I think there may be some misunderstanding, the 76 VDC is the max input voltage, but a RoadTest is not the same as a test of the specification of the device. A RoadTest is a product review (i.e. it is…

rscasny If you plan to include a power supply it should cover the input range of the EVK. Most here have basic PS but not necessarily one that goes that high nor a variable load.

I agree. But I have a budget. That's the limitation. I'm interested in anyone who has a suggestion, though,

My 2¢: I have that capability but I suspect most here don't.

Not too long ago I had to design a DCDC converter for a personal project that needed to handle 0A to 3A pulsed load. Achieving a decent step response took quite a bit of work! This IC could be interesting to test. Maybe I will give it a shot Slight smile

The Rohm simulation tool is quite nice.. it looks like a normal Spice simulator embedded in a browser, with the circuit and probes all set up. There are "spare" probes at the bottom-right : ) As many of those can be dragged as desired onto the circuit, and new charts appear for them.

If the output could be raised to 5.3VDC it would be a good PS for a portable Rpi from battery or solar power.

I was thinking of using a switching regualtor to serve as a poor man's substitute for a bench top power supply.  The wide operating range of this product in terms of both input and output voltages sounds pretty promising.

That would be a good attack vector for this road test. The switch mode kits are always a good hook to improve your electronics skills, while reviewing the design.
