Seeking Your Interest in Roadtesting a Raspberry Pi Add-on Board for developing Ethernet-capable field devices

Hi all. It's been awhile since I created a pre-roadtest discussion. It's good to be back. Let me tell you about this product.

As usual. I've been in discussion with a supplier about roadtesting an add-on board for the Raspberry Pi.  Ot's called the EVAL-CN0575-RPIZ. On a nutshell, the CN0575 is a platform for developing Ethernet-capable field devices and applications. More information follows.

I wanted to get your feedback on two questions:

  • What do you need to roadtest it?
  • How interested are you in roadtesting it?

Let me start at the beginning and give you some information about the board:

The EVAL-CN0575-RPIZ is a 10BASE-T1L MAC/PHY interface with Single Pair Power over Ethernet (SPoE) for development of field devices and applications on a Raspberry Pi platform board. The SPoE powered device (PD) and isolated flyback regulator provide 5 V power to the platform board and attached application circuitry. SPoE Class 12 (8.4 W, 24 V nominal) and Class 13 (7.7 W, 55 V nominal) are supported.

Designed for use on the Raspberry Pi platform, the CN0575 hardware features a 40-pin GPIO header, and follows the same mechanical dimensions as a standard HAT.

To allow board stacking and development of field device applications using Raspberry Pi HATs, an additional GPIO header with extended leads is included with each evaluation board. However, the CN0575 can also be used on its own as a basic temperature sensing field device with remote user input/output via an onboard button and LED.

What do you need to roadtest this product?

I was reading through the circuit evaluation section of the user guide. It says that one needs the following equipment for testing:

  • EVAL-CN0575-RPIZ
  • EVAL-ADIN1100-EBZ
  • 24 V (Class 12) or 55 V (Class 13) power supply
  • Raspberry Pi computer (Model 3B+ or above)
  • Host PC (Windows/Linux/Mac)
  • CN0575 demo Python script
  • Plug-in screw-terminal connector
  • Single-pair of 18 AWG (max) wires
  • Category 5e Ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors
  • USB-A to micro-USB-B cable

Seems like a lot of gear. Do you need all this hardware or can you test it another way? I'm trying to determine what I would need to provide beyond the EVAL-CN0575-RPIZ.

If you're looking for an excellent LoRa hat for that project: Low-Cost LoRaWAN Gateways! I'm running one of those with good results.

Based on reading some of the documents above, SPE can use the same single pair, twisted, shileded cable used for RS485. I've got a partial spool of that. To roadtest the board, I think one needs the following…

One of my projects-in-waiting is a LoRa gateway. I would like to locate it in my attic to get better range without dealing with all the issues involved in an outdoor installation.. Since there is no power in the attic, PoE would be a useful way to power the system. The LoRa gateway could be based on a Raspberry Pi, which might make this hat a great solution. I would need to explore compatibility with LoRa hats.

I wouldn't need a PC or a Pi, but would need the hat and single pair / power infrastructure. I can't promise to apply for such a road test, since it depends on what else is in the pipe and the compatibility mentioned above, but it would be tempting.
