Seeking Your Opinion - Which Version of the Arduino Opta Micro-PLC Would You Prefer to Roadtest

imageHi All. I will be roadtesting Arduino's micro-PLC, the Opta, in the near future.

Arduino has been expanding its industrial automation product offerings in the last few years and the Opta fits right into that.

If this is your first exposure to the Opta, let me give you a few facts.

Fact 1 - The Opta is a micro PLC with Industrial IoT capabilities, supporting Arduino programming experience and PLC standard languages. Its STM32H747XI dual-core Arm® Cortex®-M7 +M4 MCU allows users to perform real-time control, monitoring and implement predictive maintenance.

Fact 2 - Secure and durable by design, it supports OTA firmware updates and ensures data security from the hardware to the Cloud thanks to the onboard secure element and X.509 Standard compliance. Various connectivity options are available, along with real-time dashboards combined with the Arduino Cloud (or third-party services).

There are three versions of the Opta:

  • Opta Lite
  • Opta RS485
  • OptaWiFi

Here is some documentation:

  • Datasheet
  • Pinout
  • User Manual
  • Arduino PLC IDE

If you have the time, I'd like to learn how you would apply this micro-PLC. Just a paragraph would do. Thanks.

I still want to complete my water tunnel controller upgrade, I wonder if the Opta is up to the challenge.  The Schneider PLC wasn't very user friendly.

This product would be a good solution to retrofit older PLC's or upgrade smaller systems.

for me easily the most intriguing aspect of these products is the marriage of Arduino programming to PLC applications. Since I am familiar with PLC technology and concepts as well as Arduino IDE, it would be interesting to explore their synergy.

However I don't have any immediate plans for that level of infrastructure around my house. Maybe if I had the resources to design a completely self-sufficient habitat / eco system I would be all over this.

At work I am on the development end of things rather than the automated production end of things, so it isn't my main focus there either.

Dual core STM32 sounds fun until you realize you have to create independent applications for CM4 core and CM7 core. You have to make sure both cores wake up one after another. Inter processor communication is not as easy as implemented by ESP32 which has modified the Freertos to suit its purpose. You will have to learn how to incorporate Openamp or ring buffer to share messages between the core. Hope Arduino has abstracted all these hard part.

It can be a great controller for a pool motor and salt chlorinator to reduce energy consumption. In addition, it can monitor the health of the motor by detecting anomalies (sound, temperature, vibration)

I would like to work on OTA update feature of the Arduino. Perhaps it is with Arduino Cloud that one can update the firmware remotely.
