Do you want to take this for a spin?

It kinda looks like a donut.

It's Vishay's RAIK060.

Full datasheet:

I think that this may need some parts with it to give it the full run, but wow the rotation speed is 10krpm? Zoomies. 60mm position sensor. Perhaps that needs some motor accompanyment.

When we post forum threads such as this, they supplement our decisions on what RoadTests OwainM does now and in the future, and helps us to better position and suggest hardware to our supplier partners to offer to you, our members.

It looks like fun but I don't have any current project for it.

I recently designed some tiny encoder boards which used a 4 quadrant single chip detector (from icHaus) and I couldn't test those properly either !

To do the sensor justice you would need some precision machined metal parts to install it and an application that cared about the resolution it can manage.

I could make the metal bits but I just don't have an application for the sensor (unless I could use it to test the tiny encoder......)

If I achieve 1mm precision on anything

I somehow manage to when stubbing my toe every time I walk past the corner of the bed. ;)

10k rpm is just a max value. I hadnt tried to chug out numbers, wondering how to quantify accel/deceleration time with the data update rate.

Being an absolute encoder for robots, positioning seems to be the key measurement. Wonder about the mechanical installation, putting on a stepper motor would seem inappropriate, how does this encoder fit on ac brushless motors, does it make sense to mount on general purpose induction motors ?

I totally understand the need for this kind of precision, but it's totally out of my hobbyist tooling range. If I achieve 1mm precision on anything, it's already a miracle!

I did not studied datsheet thoroughly yet, but at the first look seems like this kit from MPS which some folks roadtested few years back: https://community.element14.com/products/roadtest/rt/roadtests/561/mps-ma732-magalpha-angle-sensor-kit-with-servo-motor-industrial-sensing#pifragment-4100=4&pifragment-4106=7&pifragment-18971=4&pifragment-18972=7&pifragment-19828=11 . This one seems to not require special magnet? Or at least I did not find anything about that after my quick look.
