RoadTest Applications Must Be Written in English

rscasny
rscasny over 7 years ago

RoadTest applicants are global. They come from nearly every continent (I haven't gotten on from Antarctica yet) and every occupational level: students through experienced engineers.

But a very small portion of RoadTest applications are written in non-English languages. Perhaps 1 or 2 percent.

Most of our suppliers use English as their language of communication. German is second and French or Spanish is third.

I surely don't want to disregard our non-English speaker applicants. But it's a matter of resources: I would need to get a translator in the language of our suppliers -- the ones who choose the finalists.

So, at this time I'd like to announce that all roadtest applications must be written in English to be considered.

If you have written an application in a currently enrolling roadtest in a language other than English and want to re-write it in English, please contact me at rscasny and I'd be happy to oblige you. (Past roadtests are done deals. Sorry.)

Sincerely,

Randall Scasny

Hi. Let me be the first to volunteer as a translator from Indian spoken languages. I shall try my best to translate as well as decipher any data that you may get.

Thanks. Sure I could go to Google Translate. But my greater point is that there have been a lot of different languages in the applications. If Google Translate were so easy, why didn't the roadtest applicant…

    Can you translate this:

    Хотелось бы ....

This is the beginning of a roadtest application.

I can see that becoming a huge chore though, if you had to do that for dozens of them, especially if they are long.

If Google Translate were so easy, why didn't the roadtest applicant take it upon himself to translate it since I communicate (as most of us on e14) in English. This is why I have put the policy in writing.

Maybe because they aren't aware the site is english based.

You provide an option for the preferred language, and even a translate service ... (top right of the pages)

I'm not disagreeing with your policy, but the site is supposed to be global, and element14 advertises that the membership is worldwide.

    Cheers

So in New Zealand we have some towns and phrases in Maori ...

It doesn't mean the natural language is Maori.

I agree that some items are in english (which begs how come the translater doesn't change them

Like I said I have no issues with wanting RT's in english, but understanding why someone might use their preferred language is part of the way to fixing it.

Bom, cada época e área da ciência teve seu próprio idioma "universal", como grego, latim, alemão, francês... Para tecnologia, hoje, é o inglês. Minha língua materna está em vias de extinção (o pomerano), então fui alfabetizado em português. Depois acrescentei o alemão, o inglês, o italiano, o espanhol... Mesmo que com alguma dificuldade, e correndo o risco de não ser entendido, não tenho como não utilizar o inglês nesse site. Bem poucos serão capazes de compreender o que escrevi até aqui.

Well, every epoch and each science field has had its own "universal" language, such as Greek, Latin, German, French... For technology, nowadays is the English. My own mother tongue it's almost extinguished (the pomeranian), so I was literate in Portuguese. Thereafter I added German, English, Italian, Spanish...  Even if with some difficulty, and at the risk of not being understood, I cannot not use English on this site. Very few will be able to understand what I have written before.
