Seeking Ideas for RoadTesting Gallium Nitride Semiconductors

I'm starting to get inquiries about roadtesting products featuring Gallium Nitride semiconductors. I have been expecting more inquiries about GaN technology because it offers some advantages over Silicon. GaN devices are great for fast switching and high efficiency. But what I've seen as far as GaN- featured development boards has been gate drivers, chargers and switched mode power supplies.image

 

But for a roadtest, these products sometimes pose a problem, if my experience as any indication. I haven't always found much interest in power supplies, converters, etc. as roadtest products. At the present time, I have not committed to any of these as roadtest products because I wanted to study how they can be roadtested to garner more interest by the roadtesters.

 

I'll add a few links and datasheets to this discussion. But I'd like to get any of your ideas on how to roadtest these products. One idea was to offer a Silcon and a GaN product as a comparative test. Another idea was to roadtest a gate driver and scope out the switching rates. Perhaps I would need to bundle a number of products together so a roadtester could build a project.

    In my last trip to the pcim power messe in nuremberg I encountered new Gallium Nitride Semiconductors GaN devices. They were very interesting but mostly targeted the high power transistors.

    Yes, because of their attributes, they are particularly good for very fast switch mode applications. They can switch high voltage and currents. Because of the fast switch time, they operate less in the linear mode during switching -> less heat and more efficiency.

    I'd expect faster rise/fall times to lead to more overshoot, undershoot and ringing.

    Be interesting to see how this is managed in their designs, still an easier issue to solve than removing heat from semiconductors.

    I don’t know. I have never looked into Tesla coils. I’d like to see the GaNs used in practical things like power inverters and more efficient voltage conversion.

    You need to deliver high current at high frequencies, which from your description, makes the GaN devices good candidates.
