CapSense MBR3 Evaluation Kit

Table of contents

imageCapSense® MBR3 is Cypress’s solution for quickly and easily replacing mechanical buttons with sleek and reliable capacitive-sensing user interfaces. The CapSense MBR3 family is the world’s easiest capacitive-sensing solution that allows you to design with the click of a mouse using our GUI-based software tool, EZ-Click™.
CapSense MBR3 combines the best of CapSense features including SmartSense™ Auto-Tuning, robust water tolerance and best-in-class proximity sensing while delivering reliable performance under all conditions. The CapSense MBR3 family comes in four small packages that are suited for various capacitive-sensing designs.
Features
Easiest-to-Design
  • CapSense MBR3 requires no firmware development – these devices are register configurable by any I2C host, like PSoC, Arduino or the Raspberry Pi
  • EZ-Click™ GUI-based software tool configures devices without the need to write any code
SmartSense Auto-Tuning
  • A CapSense algorithm that continuously compensates for system, manufacturing and environmental changes
  • Eliminates the need for manual tuning during all product design phases
Robust Water Tolerance
  • CapSense MBR3 works under water droplets, rain, mist and other liquids
  • Ensures no false touches even under streaming water
Industry's Best Capacitive Proximity Sensing
  • Achieve up to 30cm in proximity sensing distance
  • Implement advanced features like wake-on-approach to support ultra-low power applications
Reliable Performance
  • Advanced sensing algorithms ensure reliable performance even in noisy environments
  • Implement designs with Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of > 100:1

  • It will be interesting when you test Cypress's CapSense water tolerance capabilities against the competitors, use the included water dropper and do share your results!

  • Hi DAB,

As such, the CapSense MBR3 products are not designed to detect water droplets. In fact, it has available features to ignore water droplets and ensure the buttons still work in the presence of moisture.

There's some tricks you can employ to get around this:

    • If the water droplets detection is required for proximity sensors, our proximity sensors in CapSense MBR3 have 2 threshold values - one can be tuned for proximity sensing while the other can be tuned for water droplet detection.
    • Another method would be to route an additional capacitive sensor between or around the actual buttons sensors, then implement an algorithm on the host processor to detect water droplets based on the status of this additional sensor.

Since these CapSense MBR3 parts are designed to be 'plug-and-play' with their entire configuration being done via registers, there is no firmware to write.

You can alternatively use the CapSense blocks in our PSoC parts (the new PSoC 4000 being the cheapest) which give you full control over the CapSense algorithm and access to the ARM Cortex-M0 CPU to write your own application firmware.

  • I already have a MSP430TCH5E based booster pack and it works great image it will be amazing to test this kit against a worthy competitor image.

  • Hi Gagan,

Can you adjust the sensor to identify "water droplets?"

I am thinking of an interesting application for this board where detecting falling water could play an important application trigger.

    Thanks
