The CY8CKIT-059 PSoC 5LP Prototyping Kit features the CY8C5888LTI-LP097 device from the PSoC 5LP family. PSoC 5LP is the industry’s most integrated programmable SoC, combining high-precision and programmable analog and digital peripherals with an ARM® Cortex®-M3 CPU in a single chip. Process sensor signals with the 24-bit hardware DFB coprocessor, offload traditional CPU tasks to the CPLD-based Universal Digital Blocks and increase system performance with peripheral-to-peripheral DMA controller. Integrate high-precision custom 20-bit Analog Front Ends with the Programmable Analog Blocks including opamps, PGAs, filters, comparators, SAR and Delta-Sigma ADCs and the industry's best CapSense touch-sensing solution.
The kit provides access to all the PSoC 5LP device I/Os in a breadboard-compatible format. It features a micro-USB header for creating prototypes with Full Speed USB 2.0 connectivity. The kit is also designed with a unique snappable form-factor, allowing users to separate the USB connector with the KitProg Programmer and Debugger from the target board to use them independently. Once done with the prototype, you're still left with a handy SWD programmer!
The kit includes Cypress's KitProg Programmer and Debugger. KitProg can program and debug the target PSoC 5LP device via SWD when using PSoC Creator or PSoC Programmer. It supports bridging over USB-UART and USB-I2C interfaces and also provides access to Micrium µC/Probe to read and write memory on the target device. When snapped away, this tiny USB board can be used as a KitProg debugger with any PSoC 3, PSoC 4 or PSoC 5LP device. The KitProg firmware is provided as a bootloader image that can be upgraded to develop custom applications for it.

    answering your question of whether the 059 kit is a good kit to get started with PSoC,  I would say , most definetly.

     

    You can do the same basic projects with a PSoC 5LP part to get started and learn the basics, with the difference that you can grow and expand beyond normal PSoC 4 features. I just recently started playing with PSoC and CapSense and i have to admit Im very surprised with the capabilities and ease of use ! let us know how it works out !

  • I absolutely agree with Hendrik Lipka, there are some more PSoC5lp based boards, but they are again in the ~35-50$ price range which is really too much. I Got couple of 4$ kits from digikey and fell in love with PSoC since then. the 10$ -059 boards are even awesomeeeeee. (HINT of whats coming, you can use these modules and program the PSoC4BLE/PRoCBLE; Also image image that should make your mind of getting couple of these. I am now thinking of how to use these as a generic SWD programmer. )

  • Probably Cypress learned (maybe from TI) that selling these boards is not a profit center, but a marketing operation. So as long as it doesn't cost you too much money itsa OK to sell these at cost price (or maybe a little bit lower). The -050 kits for example are really great boards, and I love them. At 100$ they probably make some profit, But its not a kits that just gets distributed at a fair, or that buy "just because" its interesting and and you want to try it. 10$ or even 4 are much more different, and you might just leave such a board in a project.

    The Schmartboard PSoC 5LP worked great for me.  At US$35 it's a little pricey, especially with the US$10 Cypress 5LP prototyping kit coming out.

     

    It's great that Cypress is providing these really cheap prototyping boards, like the US$4 boards for PSoC 4.  I wonder if they're having trouble getting people to design with the parts, so they're trying to make it as attractive as possible to get started?

    The board is a nice one. Its quite small, but has everything you need. But its not really breadboard-friendly, since the the power pins are not available on the breadboard side (I'm not sure whether this has changed in rev B - but at least the pins are now in the right place so you can de-solder and replace them).

    The prototyping kit has about the same form factor I think (maybe its a little bit longer), but it comes with a real programmer / debugger (KitProg).

  • The tools are Windows only, but they are great. Cypress provides much introductory material, for example the Creator 101 series. If you follow the the introductions and look at some examples, PSoC is very easy to learn. But that doesn't mean that they aren't capable - you actually can build very advanced stuff with them. It just takes a while to get used to "think in PSoC".

    I started with a (still unfinished) PSoC intro blog series, showcasing how to build a frequency counter with PSoC4 and 5 (I really need to finish this one, since Cypress is coming up with new stuff faster than I can write about it...)

  • PSoC Rocks, This is a really Good board to get started with PSoC5LP, The Tools are extremely simple to use and free.   • This looks like a nice board. I've never gotten the chance to play with a PSoC before. Is this a good one for a beginner into PSoC? How do the tools for it look?

  • But that documentation makes one crucial assumption: that you are using the KitProg on the PSoC4 Pioneer kit. Than one can only program a PSoC4 target, so to program the PSoC5 on that board you needed a MiniProg. But since you are using the new KitProg for PSoC5 targets, it can replace the MiniProg3. So you need to use it to program the boot loader onto the PSoC5LP target, and then this boot loader should show up (when  using the right USB connector) and can be used to program the KitProg.

  • Well according to the docs I read it seams that if you somehow mess up the kitprog fw then you need a MiniProg to reflash the fw. But I too think there must be some mechanism to flash the KitProg fw using SWD !!

  • Oh, then I misunderstood you, since you asked about the boot loader, not about KitProg. Did you try to a USB example project and see whether that one works? I also think that there are different versions of KitProg out there (e.g. the one on the BLE CySmart dongle seems to be a different one than the one on the BLE Pioneer kit). Apart from that - when you have the boot loader thats used for KitProg, it can be programmed by the KitProg on the DevKit, and then it should be used to program KitProg itself. I think there should be a user manual out there for the original Pioneer kit that outlines the procedure how to get KitProg back.

  • I understand that but as the target is also exactly the same psoc5 so why can't we use that to get another swd programmer. That's what I am trying to do. I tried programing the target psoc5lp with kitprog but the board doesn't get detected while connecting it to the PC. I am not sure what is going wrong.

  • The KitProg on this board is a full-featured programmer. So it doesn't need a boot loader on the target. No need for a MiniProg3...

    All the PSoC 5LP boards I've looked at come with a bootloader pre-programmed into the chip.  So as long as you don't overwrite it you don't need a JTAG/SWD dongle like MiniProg3.  Usually you just program your application code and leave the bootloader intact -- at least that's my understanding.  Someone who has actually programmed a PSoC over USB may want to correct me.

    I did some design at the logic diagram level with PSoC Creator and it did work, but it only runs on Windows which I usually only use if someone is paying me to do so.  I did the actual PSoC device programming using SWD (single-wire debug) using a generic FTDI FT2232H module as a JTAG/SWD dongle.  That was loads of fun, since you can do things like play with I/O pins and turn them on and off without having to write any PSoC code at all -- you just write directly to the PSoC memory-mapped device registers over SWD.  However, your fun is limited since Cypress doesn't document the digital routing configuration registers and there's no published way to reverse-engineer them.  IMO it's silly that Cypress doesn't document routing, since all the other configuration registers are documented.

     

    Yes, you can write logic using Verilog, but you still need to run PSoC Creator -- on Windows.

  •   I found that the digital components can use Verilog. See http://www.cypress.com/?docID=49650 4.3.3. It does not make too much sense, but hope you can find what you make need.
