Who would be an ideal roadtester for the Smart Bench Essentials?

University teaching labs and general test labs need test instruments that are smart and connected to each other, connected to the lab, connected to the cloud and connected to innovation. These differentiated connections enable customers to accelerate connected insights, whether in learning, teaching or troubleshooting.

What are the applications for this product?

The Smart Bench Essentials series instruments are ideal for modern university teaching labs that require an enhanced environment conducive to sharing and maximizing learning. Most universities struggle to adapt to this new environment, seeking a blended learning experience with the right technologies. Keysight’s SBE series, when coupled with the PathWave Remote Access Lab software, enables students to schedule and book access to the lab instruments. Once remotely accessing the lab instruments, they can switch between different training kits or measurement points during a lab session. Access is through the PathWave cloud application, which also provides collaborative chat tools and cloud storage. Keysight’s SBE series instruments, when coupled with the PathWave Lab Manager software, enables educators or lab administrators to simplify centralized lab configuration and asset management, as well as mass firmware updates for instruments. They can manage and configure lab instruments for multibench setup. Keysight’s SBE series instruments are general-purpose instruments that are used for the design and test of products in manufacturing and R&D. The new SBE series provide basic, reliable, and capable bench instruments that are affordable for small manufacturing businesses. Workspace in many labs is valuable, requiring instruments that are compact and stackable.

  • To all applicants,

I just added instructions on how to complete the application entry form. Sorry for not doing it sooner. I'm still coming up to speed with this new system. If you have applied, you might want to take a look at the instructions.

  • To all applicants.

In this roadtest the roadtester will received 4 pieces of test equipment: o'scope, waveform generator, DMM and DC power supply.

I wanted to provide you an example of a test procedure for a previous roadtest where an oscilloscope was involved. This example really illustrates what a roadtest application is: a proposal. Anyone who has written a proposal, they are rarely simple and short documents; rather, they are well-planned and strategic documents.

    (d) What is your testing procedure or project plan (Be as specific as you can)?

The plan is divided in three tasks:

    1. analog/digital oscilloscope
    2. RF spectrum analyser
    3. arbitrary function generator

    analog/digital oscilloscope

For the evaluation of the oscilloscope I let me be guided by the excellent articles on reviewing oscilloscopes by Colin O'Flynn of circuit cellar, as I also did in my previous reviews. Here is the full list of topics:

    • Topic 1-1: Do You Want a PC-Based or Stand-Alone Instrument?
    • Topic 1-2: Where’s the Ground?
    • Topic 1-3: Input Types
    • Topic 1-4: Probe Quality and Type
    • Topic 2-1: Analog Bandwidth
    • Topic 2-2: Sample rate
    • Topic 2-3: Equivalent Time Sampling
    • Topic 2-4: ADC Resolution
    • Topic 3-1: Memory depth
    • Topic 3-2: FFT Length
    • Topic 3-3: Segmented buffer
    • Topic 3-4: Remote Control/Streaming
    • Topic 3-5: Decoding Serial Protocols
    • Topic 3-6: Software Features
    • Topic 4-1: Triggering Methods
    • Topic 4-2: External Trigger Input
    • Topic 4-3: Arbitrary Waveform Generator
    • Topic 4-4: Clock Synchronization

I will specifically compare the results to the oscilloscopes I tested previously. In particular the PICOSCOPE 5444D MSO -  USB Oscilloscope which has reasonable high specifications.

    RF spectrum analyser

For the RF spectrum analyser I will compare the performance to the R&S® FPC1000 - 3GHz Spectrum Analyser for the following applications:

    • Measuring harmonics of HAM radio transmitters.
    • Exploring home automation signals on 433 MHz.
    • Measuring filter characteristics.
    • Calibration a DDS-60 VFO for WSPR transmissions.

I will have a critical look at:

    • center frequencies and span
    • scan speed
    • resolution bandwidth
    • video bandwidth
    • noise levels
    • detector

    arbitrary function generator

Up till now I never saw an arbitrary function generator with a frequency range up till 50MHz, which means that signals can be generated in the HF frequency range.

This gives the opportunity to use it for instance for testing bandfilters in combination with the spectrum analyser.

I'm also curious whether it has a digital output, which was lacking on the PICOSCOPE 5444D.

    Planning

In general, 60 days are sufficient for a sound review. But since this is a very versatile device, I wonder if an assessment period of 60 days is sufficient in this case.

Therefore I already proposed to extend the review to 90 days, with mandatory updates after e.g. 30 and 60 days?

Since I'm not in the position to make this decision, I herewith provide a planning for both options.

First the week planning for 90 days period (12 weeks):

In the event that we have to adhere to the 60-day period, I unfortunately have to cut back on activities. The oscilloscope part is the same, but for the spectrum analyzer I have removed the applications for home automation and DDS calibration. The digital part of the function generator is also removed. Moreover, the planning runs a greater risk because there is no longer free time to solve unforeseen problems.

(Randall's note: I believe the review was submitted within 60 days. He did what he could during that time period)

  • Wow, got butterflies just reading the description.

  • A BenchVue license would be included via each instrument's serial number:

    BenchVue licenses included with instruments

Keysight instruments started including BenchVue licenses June 1, 2019. Instruments purchased after June 1, are eligible for a BenchVue license. These licenses can be activated from BenchVue with only the model and serial number of your instruments. See instructions to check for eligibility and activation instructions.

  • To Roadtest applicants:

Question: I've read through some of the application entry forms. I have a question. This roadtest involves four outstanding pieces of test equipment. MY QUESTION: But what pulls all of them together?

If you have not touched on testing the answer to this question in your application then you need to study the documents in the Additional Information section, because you likely have not written a comprehensive application entry form.

  • I have privately received questions about this roadtest. I am pasting my answers below:

Who can apply for this road test?

Answer: You must be a member of the element14 community. That's the basic requirement. You cannot be an employee of Avnet or any of Avnet's associated companies. You must be at least 18 years old. Our T&Cs spell this out.

Can students themselves apply to this roadtest or only universities?

Answer: Students can apply. You don't necessarily need to be a university. But we do not have group roadtests.

What type of review/final result is to be produced once selected for this roadTest?

Answer: there are links to reviews on this page. This is the kind of review that needs to be written: community.element14.com/.../the-best-element14-roadtest-reviews-of-2021

  • To all roadtest applicants,

This is one of the first roadtests on our new platform, so everyone, including myself, is learning it. The roadtest application entry form is quite different, but the information in the application form you complete should be the same. Competitive application forms provide comprehensive descriptions of the applicant's test procedure. For a roadtest that is giving the roadtester 4 types of test equipment this is especially true.

There is a short field for providing a test procedure at the bottom of the form. However, that's just the basics or enough to overview your test procedure. To provide detailed test procedures of each piece of equipment provied (4 total), you can create it in an MS Word file and upload it in the Supplemental File feature of the entry form.  See below.image

  • Fantastic! This makes a "complete" bench labor unit.

Generator, PowerSupply, Osci, Multimeter ... 5,5-digits!

Would look what my students talk about.

The application.... audio amp, servo motor controller, ...hm... let's see.

    Best Regards

    Gerald
