Wish List Preferences

I am curious if other makers have similar views to me...

What instrument is highest on your wish list?

What prize would you find most motivating in a design challenge?

Which instrument would you most like to road test?

If you comment, perhaps you could list your top 3 wish list instruments.

A desktop CNC mill would probably be at the top of the list. A PCB printer has always been desirable, however it's now a lot easier these days to get small batches of custom PCBs made by mail order supply…

PCB from outsource has always the problem of time. And cost increase if you should correct them. So launching a mail order small quantity supply batch after a bare prototype has been tested remain preferable…

I was going to select other - just because I like RED. But in reality I could always use a decent scope. Mine is like 30+years old and is getting tired. I cannot afford to purchase a digital scope for hobby work.

Work will not pay for one either as it is not our 'core' business.

Ah well we will wait and see.

    Cheers

    W.

It can do double sided cards with conductive vias

Wow! That's really impressive. I was already impressed when I thought it only did single sided, and wondered if through-hole components would work with it.

Sooner or later I just have to get a scope with serial decoders.

For soldering I have a Hakko, which I like a lot, but I put a Metcal in the poll because I know their stellar reputation.

I've used some very high end trinocular systems, and am always surprised by how much is lost in the camera images compared to direct binocular views. I think a good macro camera is preferable for most, but not all pictures, especially if extreme magnification is needed.

    1) Tektronix MSO2024B - the point, analog also digital measurement (logic analyzer) would be very important for an all around working place.

Last we have had seen the Keysight DSO1102G in RoadTest. Now, if this Tektronix comes out for testing, we can compare with the Keysight.

Yes this is a great little scope and you can get serial decode options for it too which are actually currently being bundled for free! MSO2024B+FREE DPO2BND TEKTRONIX, Oscilloscope, MSO2000B Series, 4+16 Channel, 200 MHz, 1 GSPS, 1 Mpts, 2.1 ns | Farnell …

    2) Tektronix AFG2021 - Function generator; without this equipment there is no possible testing e.g. amplifiers.

I agree, although for me my current oscilloscope has a reasonable single channel AFG built in, I find it a bit limiting though and there have been times I have needed a two channel one with both channels in sync so for that reason I would probably go for something like the Tektronix AFG3000 series. Something like this would be on my list: http://uk.farnell.com/tektronix/afg3022c/afg3000-function-generator-2ch/dp/2250012

    3) Metcal MX5251 - one of the best soldering and rework station ever i worked with; i worked with an older type of this soldering station.

Metcal is a brand OK International.

    Hand Soldering Systems - Metcal

I agree, I swear by my Metcal setup. I've used quite a few different brands of soldering stations over the years but I always came to the conclusion that the Metcal was the most consistently easy to get good results which is why when I was kitting out my own lab a couple of years back I had no hesitation about what I was going to get.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

Hehe yeah my enthusiasm may be partially damped because I'd hoped to finish assembly within a day, but marking out and drilling holes took up most of yesterday : (

SDR definitely provides a lot of possibilities, I just didn't want to get any hopes up that it would replace test gear. But for doing a lot at low cost I think it is excellent.

Oh that looks really good! As you say, not a complete replacement for an SA but a lot cheaper and great t have on hand for some quick testing!
