Poll: Why Haven't You Applied for this Roadtest: STM32H7B3I-DK -  DISCOVERY KIT

Summertime is one of those busy times of year where people spend quality time with family, friends, and significant others. But this year you may be spending your summer time closer to home. And what better way to spend your quality time than with an element14 roadtest!

Inn particular, this roadtest: STM32H7B3I-DK -  DISCOVERY KIT

There are so many good things I could say about this dev board (with display). But the thing that stands out for me is what you can do with this board given all the peripherals you can experiment with:  the board help to evaluate the following peripherals: USB HS OTG, microSDTm card, 8-bit camera interface, audio DAC stereo with audio jack input and output, 128-Mbit SDRAM memory, 512-Mbit Octo-SPI Flash memory, Wi‑FiRegistered module (802.11 b/g/n compliant), I2C extension connector, FD-CAN, 20-pin microphone MEMS connector with DFSDM interface, 4.3-inch TFT-LCD (480*272) using an RGB interface with a capacitive touch panel.

You can even take advantage of three graphical stacks running on the same board with many featured applications:

– Menu launcher

– Audio player TGFX application (MP3 support)

– Clock and Weather with Alarm feature

– Video player TGFX application (enabled)

– TGFX Graphic demonstration

– STemWin Graphic demonstration

– EWZ Graphic demonstration

Poll Question: What's holding you back from applying to this roadtest?

This is a high end and very capable microcontroller kit. I am working on several projects that need a microcontroller, but this beast is way overkill for my projects. For modules like this I would mainly…

The board shares a problem with many other dev boards - it's stuffed with goodies and that means it's only suitable for fun and not much use for work. I've looked at the chip and might use it, I have current…

I'm not sure I agree that you have to have particular skills or knowledge to perform a good road test. For some specialist items sure, but not for something like a microcontroller.

I've always felt that the purpose of a road test is to help someone who might be interested in a product decide if it's suitable for them. In the case of a development board, it's relevant how easily someone who is not familiar with the product can get on with it. For microcontrollers in particular the ease with which you can become familiar with the quirks of the IDE and peripherals is key. Are the examples clear? Can you build upon them to create your own project? Is the documentation up to scratch? All these questions can often be answered by someone new to the device family better than someone who already knows it inside out.

I don't really have the time to commit to this road test at the moment, but if I was I'd be trying to answer the following questions: Is this board good enough that I'd be considering the STM32H7 range for future projects? Could it tempt me away from just sticking with what I know?

In general, i agree with some of the other comments here; ie the system is so capable, that what is a good set of tests to fully exercise it, and do that in a short time frame.  So, either the time has to increase, and/or ST maybe puts out some recommendations of possible use cases.  Then people could pick/choose which set of tests to perform.

I believe to perform a Roadtest of a product you need to highly skilled and should have the domain expertise. At this point of time I working on my skills and are not up to mark for being a Road tester ( I spelled it rightly I guess image)

It feels like something that would take a great deal of time for me to get up to speed with just ‘engaging’ with the board before even starting to do a subjective road test so I think it would be unfair to the manufacturer and E14.  This feels like something that could do with a RoadTest based on a longer-term project, regularly blogged about, rather than the standard Ts and Cs.

I’m a believer in doing RoadTests that one has the skills to do, irrespective, in order to keep the program going because it benefits everyone. This would probably fit with my current project over a longer term but I couldn’t achieve what the RoadTest program wants over it’s normal timeframe.  Perhaps some RoadTests should, purposefully, be over an extended period of time - that would need thinking about of course.

Jon and Compact, I think they can use some more candidates. And it's an interesting kit.

I'll post I posted the application I submitted for this test.

I selected other since I recently did another RoadTest.

I was going to pick this or another STM32H7 board up for working with TinyML and TouchGFX.

Is there a need for other RoadTesters for this?

Similar to rstone, it's outside of my current skill set and I don't know where I could fit the required "train up" into my life at the moment.  I've got an ST board I used for NFC that hasn't seen the light of day since I finished the training module.  It looks like an awesome board.  Maybe someday...

Sorry - I could have been clearer. By "embedded" I wasn't thinking of Linux SBCs. Once you have an OS in the mix then I agree something like Go is quite appropriate. I don't think it's well suited to a microcontroller where you'd normally use C or C++.

It's used by some BlockChain implementations. It runs fine on a Pi or BB.
