Increasing government regulations have created new design challenges for the small engine market. New standards in pollution control have pushed the limits of the mechanical carburetor of motorbikes, lawn mowers and utility engines. To meet these new regulations, small engine-based products must evolve from mechanical to electronic control and include sensors that allow precise metering of fuel and air for the combustion process. While the carburetor has been optimized for decades on small engines, only now are electronics beginning to be created to address the needs of a small engine.
