Several carmakers are prioritizing Automotive Cybersecurity

Smart Transportation systems are mixing embedded technologies, data processing capabilities, and telematics breakthroughs to develop a robust network of solutions that are changing the way everyone (users, organizations, and governments) are not only relating with vehicles, drivers and passengers, but pedestrians, roads, regulations, and more.

Carmakers are developing more secure and safer vehicles, more automated and connected to the outside environment than ever before.  Consequently, the increasing interest in cybersecurity topics is urgently rising as protecting cars and trucks from vulnerabilities and threats is crucial —the Automotive Cybersecurity market will exceed $837 million by 2024, according to the Automotive Cybersecurity Market - Global Industry Size Report 2024 by Global Market Insights market research and strategy consulting firm.

Mobile networks for the automotive industry are also boosting the Automotive Cybersecurity market growth. The next-generation of cars and trucks are using 5G networks to communicate vehicles and on-road sensors for relevant tasks like shortening travel times, avoiding collisions, or reducing fuel consumption. The 5G networks and self-driving vehicles are opening opportunities for carmakers in the fields of data processing, management, and driver safety.

Most of the carmakers are working on network security initiatives with communication service providers to ensure the safety of the vehicle against attacks from hackers. Protecting the data over network buses is fundamental for privacy and operational security —the in-vehicle networks handle both personal and operational information such as microphone recording, location, or call and navigation history. Current cars and trucks are monthly uploading to the cloud around 25 gigabytes of vehicle data through 5G networks, Local Interconnect Network (LIN), Controller Area Network (CAN), automotive Ethernet, FlexRay, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC). The Automotive Cybersecurity concerns and threats rise as the uploaded vehicle data might reach one terabyte by 2022.

Several carmakers are prioritizing Automotive Cybersecurity and collaborating with other companies and vendors to increase the security offerings aimed to maintain passenger safety while traveling. They all are adopting the multi-layered security approach that is becoming widely accepted: using comprehensive solutions and combining innovative technologies and cybersecurity services to address the hurdles of connected vehicles. Partnerships are becoming key to enhancing the vehicle DSRC, Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication systems, together with in-vehicle Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and embedded solutions to guarantee safety and security for everyone.

Because passenger/consumer cars or trucks held almost 90% of the market share in 2017, carmakers are aiming drivers be able to trust their vehicles, as Automotive Cybersecurity is a highly valuable feature for people when they purchase the vehicle.
