Can Green Transportation Becomes Reality? Green Vehicles! Green Trains! Green Aeroplanes! Green Ships!

Green transportation is definitely not new and many people have been discussing on it recently. So why are we not putting these green transportation thoughts into reality? Challenge this question if you have come across any good example or move. Green vehicles, Green trains, Green aeroplanes, Green ships, or something else? Please bear in mind that transportation is one of the major contributors of the global carbon emission!

  • I Think Transportation produces less emission then coal power plants.  In any case i was thinking of converting my old beat up 95 Toyota corolla into an EV but but after making modifications to it in Pro Engineer and based on my Mat lab analysis given our current battery technology, the total mass of my Toyota,& DC motor power. I found that converting my car to an EV Isn't really economical unless gas prices hit above $4.00 a gallon. I was looking at different way of making my commute to work more efficient and found that street cycles are way better gasoline millage wise. i found a yamaha (2010) that would get me 78 miles to the gallon ... That is more than more hybrid cars.

    Aditya, what you have mentioned about using Pro Engineer to do the modeling is really interesting. Care to share more on it and how it is used to make your mentioned modification?

     

    Anyone out there would like to give a try on addressing the mentioned statement of " I found that converting my car to an EV Isn't really economical unless gas prices hit above $4.00 a gallon". I am reserved on what have been mentioned. The reason is that cost is definitely one important factor for consideration but not all. Other factors like EV can be energy storage for Smart Grid, carbon free in operation, etc.

    I thought this is a hot topic to discuss. Why is there nobody to come into this discussion?

     

    Green transportation is having huge amount of research, design and implementation issues, just throw a stone, and the problems will emerge. Who would vounteer to throw his stone and emerge a green transportation problem to be discussed here? Come forward!

    Unfortunately, the issue is not that we can not or will not, but when the right technology makes the transformation profitable.  At this time, you have entire cultures, businesses and governments all tied up with non-green technologies.  That is a lot of human stuborness to move.  When you have a green vehicle that is cheaper, better, safer and fun to drive, people would snap them up as fast as they could be built.  The same for aircraft, trains, ships, etc.

    I totally agree with the idea of going green, but no one has come up with the Ford Model T of green.  That is the challenge you need to solve.

    I do not agree with the point that we have to wait for green stuffs to come. When would we know when is the right technology? This is like a chicken and egg problem. Everyone must do their part to make things work. Instead of waiting for you and you and you to make things come true, why not have a common belief and work out something useful in green. All of us cna make a change to our future for a sustainable one!

    I agree that each person may choose to do what they think is "Green", but to have a measureable affect on the environment, you need a large group participating.  That is why you need the Green Technology solution.  Most people are too lazy to do even the small green practices.  If you don't believe me, go down the street on your next trash day and look at how much each family recycles verses what they throw away.

    The biggest problem is to define what is truely Green and what just looks like it is green.  In the end, the planet will decide which lifeforms it will support and which it will not.  The scientific evidence is clear, you can either evolve or die, and yet, there are the life extingusishing events that completely destroys most or all life on the planet and restarts evolution from a new base line.

    For me, I do those things that make sense to me.  As an engineer, I hate to waste anything, be it resources, energy, food, water, etc.  Others have a different philosophy and do things differently.  I don't lose any sleep because others do things differently.  I do what I can and go on.  If enough people do the right things, then we may  all prosper.  If not, we will all have to deal with the consequences of our past choices, both good and bad.
