Getrag received the first order for its dual clutch transmission 6DCT250 from Qoros Automotive Co., Ltd, an independent JV carmaker in China. Attributes of the transmission include easy shifting, reduced fuel consumption compared to conventional automatic transmissions, and flexibility and functionality in hybrid applications. Start of production is planned for 2013 in the Getrag plant Nanchang.
In addition to the six speed manual transmissions Getrag will supply to Qoros, the dual clutch transmission 6DCT250 will be applied to the first car under Qoros brand, which will meet all European standards and be exported to western European markets.
Getrag said sales of the 6DCT250, introduced in 2010, should break through the million-mark by 2013. It was developed for installation in the middle and small car segment and is presently used in Renault Mégane, Renault Scénic as well as Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta models.
We are extremely pleased with this further breakthrough for our high-volume dual clutch transmissions and are very proud of our product and the positive feedback we have received from the automotive markets. This shows us that our strategy and our investments in the dual clutch transmission technology are right.
—Mihir Kotecha, CEO of Getrag
Kotecha said that Getrag’s key production locations at Bari, Italy and Irapuato, Mexico will be working at full capacity far sooner than anticipated. Planning is already taking place to ensure that the capacities are expanded to existing markets in addition to the production that is planned in China.
