Following in the tire-tracks of its older, larger and wagon-variant siblings, the 2012 Toyota Prius C has been awarded the coveted Top Safety Pick Award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
A separate set of crash tests from those carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the IIHS tests are highly-respected within the automotive industry and test a variety of crash scenarios, including those from the front, rear and side.
Awarded an overall rating of ‘Good’ in frontal offset, side impact and roof strength tests, the compact hybrid became the third member of the Prius family to be awarded the Top Safety Pick.
In fact, the IIHS awarded the 2012 Prius C a ‘Good’ rating in all but the head/neck evaluation segment of the frontal offset test and the structure/safety cage evaluation segment of the side impact test. In both these cases, the car was awarded an ‘Acceptable’ rating.
Also awarded an IIHS Top Safety Pick Award is the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu Eco, which was awarded a ‘Good’ rating in everything except the Driver Torso Injury side impact test, for which it was awarded an ‘Acceptable’.
