Who do you recognize as an inspirational engineer?

Today is Nikola Tesla's birthday and many rightly recognize him as one of the greatest, most influential engineers of all time. However, we want to know who do you personally recognize as the greatest? Were you inspired by a well known figure in engineering, or was it somebody far lesser known that inspires you and continues to do so?

Let us know in the comments below before Wednesday July 16th and we will pick the ten best comments to receive a pack containing these limited edition Nikola Tesla stickers that we have made especially to celebrate the great man's birthday. You can also get hold of these stickers at this year's EMF camp near Bletchley Park, England which element14 are supporting.

For more on Tesla, read "The Shocking Truth about Nikola Tesla" and also "Tesla's idea of transmitting wireless energy is still going strong".

In the original Mission Impossible series, they had a brilliant engineer played by Greg Morris. Every week I would watch as he built up gizmos to solve the caper of the week. He always portrayed a calm…

The most inspirational engineers in my life today is the team at Adafruit. They manage to make people want to do electronics and create things, be it basic or more advanced projects.

I would also have to say Ben Heck. It was by discovering his show on Youtube some years ago that I ended up becoming a member on element14 and started fiddling with Arduino and Raspberry Pi.

Right now I admire a couple of engineers, Nikola Tesla is undoubtedly an inspiration, his life and his great contribution to science are part of my respect.

Someone who I also admire is Limor Fried, co-founder at Adafruit, her work really excites me, designing hardware and making code, no doubt is an example to follow in these days!

I think the most inspirational engineers in my life right now are the professors in my department in graduate school.  Watching how they interact with each other and with students at all levels demonstrates their passion to engineering both as researchers and as teachers.  They do great research in interesting areas, but equally, they want to share that passion with young people and pass along their knowledge and skills.

My non-engineer inspiration for engineering is my 10 year old nephew who decided he wants to be an engineer after seeing some of the robots in my lab.  I want him to have an engineer that he looks up to and that motivates me to push on with my PhD.

Nikola Tesla is undoubtedly an inspiration. His life's journey and the sheer dedication to engineering, his contributions and his work are an inspiration to me. I am from a relatively small city and from a family of non engineers. I started playing with electronics at the age of 10 just out of curiosity which grew as I began to study science at school. There was a time when I began to doubt my interests since our world is driven by careers as a means to success. I choose to become an electronics engineer in a country obsessed with Software and IT as the career choice for money and growth. I came across a curious project by the name of a Tesla Coil one day and that's when I read the entire life of Nikola Tesla. It made sense and it inspired me even more to be creative rather than just another engineer. His varied interest, his work in America, his wireless power project are so diverse and yet have one thing in common- Innovation. He proves that "It is the Thought Process that matters"
