What's the Gift that Led You to Give Back?

 

Gift us the story of your love for engineering & technology!

 

Every great love affair starts somewhere.  Did the sparks fly the moment of your first encounter with anything related to engineering or technology?image

 

Maybe you found it dull and boring at first? Did your mind go numb as you listened to concepts too complicated to understand and numbers too overwhelming to compute? Did your love blossom slowly over time, as you discovered layer upon layer of depth, becoming arrested by incomprehensible beauty, as you longingly gazed into the abyss of a perfect alignment of mathematical symmetry and artistic harmony?

 

Did it begin with an exchange of gifts?  Engineering and technology, as you know, offers many tantalizing gifts. Did you have a moment together?  A moment that would change the rest of your life forever!

The end of the year is a time for giving and reflection. Gifts are exchanged, resolutions are made, and you look back on the past. You may even reach further and think of the pivotal moments that led you in the current direction of your life.

 

Whether its the gift of an experience, the gift of a piece of hardware or software, the gift of an idea or a person who inspired you, think of a gift that influenced you to pursue engineering & technology.

 

Here are some examples of the gifts that led others to give back:

 

The Gift of Wonder

 

Steve Wozniak, widely credited as the inventor of the Personal Computer, gave an interview where he credits a journal he found in a hall closet for his interest in engineering and technology: "...I found a journal in a hall closet with descriptions of binary numbering, logic gates and storage devices....When I discovered a 9-year old could understand this stuff I knew it would be my passion forever."image

 

An engineer may not get or even want attention for their accomplishments, its their job, to make things work even if it means pushing technology as far as it goes, making the seemingly impossible, possible. A good deal of selflessness is required in engineering, which in its way makes it sound a lot like giving.  For an engineer like Wozniak, it opened up a world of wonder for him that would change the world forever!

The Gift of the Whole Brain

 

Many of the skills required to be a good engineer are well known and have been talked about a lot.  A lot of formal training in math and science is required to develop the rational thinking and logic required to solve real world problems. Not only are you expected to solve complex problems, you are asked to implement solutions in cost effective and practical ways.This brings us to another prized trait in engineers; the ability to think creatively. The ability to think big and use your imagination is highly valued, especially when it comes to solving complicated problems that may involve monetary or feasibility concerns. Anyone that has ever worked in tech knows you have to work within the constraints of the technology of the given time and even a perfect product will be obsolete before you know it.image

 

Although mostly known as one of the great artist, there's perhaps no better exemplier what can be accomplished in engineering using a whole-brain approach than Leonardo Di Vinci: "To develop a complete mind: study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else."  In addition to being an accomplished architectural engineer, Da Vinci's investigation of human anatomy helped lay the early foundation of the biomedical engineering field.image

The Gift of Diversity

 

In a world ruled by seemingly arbitrary lines. Engineering and technology follow the laws of physics and if you can master those laws and bend technology to your will, you find it's the product of your work that matters and this gives opportunity to people from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.  The appeal of technology and engineering for people in all corners of the world is that regardless of your gender, race, family, background, or social status, your contribution has value because of where you come from. That is why some of the great technology companies and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) educators are at the forefront of recognizing the need to promote a diverse and inclusive environment.image

 

Engineers and technologists recognize the value diversity brings to the work they are able to accomplish, if you are going to invent and innovate solutions that solve the needs of everyone you're only going to succeed by bringing in diverse perspectives. Education in engineering is now focused on being more diverse because, as explained in an article about the changing face of engineering education, that drives innovation.

 

The Gift of Curiosity

 

Once you understand the mathematical and mechanistic way everything works you open doors, that lead you to other doors, that lead to still more doors. Engineers use quantitative analysis to understand and model the world around them. They witness the interplay between science and technology, how science advances technology, and vice versa. In a profile on Live Science, Maurizio Porfiri, who holds a PH.D. in engineering mechanics credits the literature he read growing up for the curiosity needed to excel in engineering: "Being creative and being curious is more important than being the smartest or best at equations if you want to be a great engineer or researcher."image

 

Porfiri was included in Popular Science's Brilliant 10 in 2012, an elite group of scientists under 40 who stands to dramatically impact their field, despite being a self-described "okay student" as well as the recipient of the 2008 NSF Career Award.  In engineering and technology, curiosity is what drives you to learn new programming languages, experiment with new systems, and come up with novel solutions to solve problems.

The Gift of a Better Tomorrow

 

There are many pressing needs in the world in fields like technology including energy, sustainability, transportation, education, healthcare, food, and the environment. While a goal of many disciplines in science is to understand reality, the ultimate goal of engineering and technology is to create a better tomorrow that leaves the world a better a place.image

 

The work of engineers is everywhere.  In hospitals and clinics there is manufacturing pharmaceuticals, designing intravenous infusion pumps, programming electronic medical records. Biomedical engineers are as much a part of patient care as nurses and physicians. Meanwhile, mechanical engineers contribute to transportation; environmental engineers contribute to sustainability and energy; and electrical engineers contribute to communications.

 

The Gift of Generosity

 

Perhaps the greatest gift of engineering and technology is that it can not only make life more comfortable for everyone, but it can also save lives. An understanding of engineering and technology can be used to serve the public and address global challenges by putting you in a position to help others using your skills.  Environmental Engineer Lilia Abron, founder of Peer Consultants and Peer Africa, credits the book Silent Sprint by Rachel Carson, as the inspiration behind her sanitary engineering vocation.image

 

Lilia Abron runs a program that unifies energy efficiency and sustainable housing construction, along with economic development, to create sustainable human settlements.  She tells her alumni bulletin: "It bothered me to see people living without any power to change their lives, and government funds being wasted by construction companies just trying to make money. I told my business partner, 'I know how to solve this.'" The book Silent Spring, first published in 1962, is also the inspiration for the environmental movement that led to the EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency).image

The Gift that Kept On Giving

 

There's perhaps no better way to succeed in life than to love what you do because then you'll never you'll never "work" a day in your life. Educators are finding that key to developing children's interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) may lie in making STEM applicable to everyday life, making it more interesting and hands on, and emphasizing the process over results. If you developed a love for Science, Technology, and Math you could probably point to examples in your life that fall into one of those categories.  It could be a HEATH kit you received when you were a child, your first computer, working with your Dad in the garage, a science fair, or any number of experiences that you can point to as having influenced your love for engineering or technology.

    Hi Don Bishop's Blog . The word I should have used is Crammers and Cramming. I heard mugging means when someone just memorizes everything without trying to understand. Thanks for pointing out.     I was 'bitten' after I started building soccer robots at school. I couldn't put them down, there was always something to do or upgrade. I eventually started designing all the circuitry myself and investing in quite a few expensive tools...

    At the age of 13 I bought myself a ZX81, fascinated by the idea that someone could have a computer in their own home. I taught myself basic and eventually had a couple of programs published in computing magazines. The big turning point for me though was watching my dad build expansion devices for it. I really wanted a 16k ram pack but couldn't afford it so my dad set about making one. Once he'd finished it and it was up and running, I had him take me through how it worked, the addressing, clocking etc. I was totally hooked, before I moved on to bigger and better computers, that ZX81 had been hacked with sound, hi-res graphics, a full size keyboard, all mounted on a foldable case /table with printer and cassette tape recorder. The case was finished with a carrying handle and a place to hold a TV.

     

    I bought a book on ZX81 interfacing projects and had it interacting with the world around me turning on leds, responding to switches, I used loads of magnets and reed switches.

     

    35 years later I'm just as excited by it all, if I sometimes wish I had a bit more time to play with all the Pi and arduino projects swimming around my head.

    I was always interested ín technology. When I was young, my father introduced ne tó the world of computers and computer games    He used to make game for children and I was really happy to play those.

    After I got older, I started to get interested in making my own games so I have made some simle applications with the help of my father. I was using softwares like scratch, gamemaker or multimedia fusion. These made learning how a program works much easier.

    After I have made some games, I started to get interest in how does a computer work. In the high school, I got a nice set of Arduino UNO including a lot of different sensors and basic electronic components. I loved using a breadboard and make some interesting projects!    (My favourite was a motion sensor with a speaker    my mother got scared after entering my room and heard the alarm)

    I got a raspberry pi later that year and started to grow my collection of different enectronics accessories and books. I love reading about what I like, so I learned to use more and more developer boards and programming languages.

    I start my studies as an electrical engineer, so I got a lot of new information about how things work around us. That time I have bought a robot base and Is have built robots for different simple tasks. (Following a line, avoid obstacles...) I think that is the funniest part of electronics   . I really like to make something that moves and follow my instructions.

    Today I have less time for tinkering, but I really enjoy my studies, and Is use my kit to make better and better things in my spare time.

    I got involved with technology at the age of two when my mom left me alone in the room with her laptop and a usb camera. When she returned a few minutes later, she found me with her laptop and her new working camera that she could figure out how to use. Later at the age of 10 my mom gave me the same laptop she used when I was 2. On that laptop I would use to just look up laptops or computer pieces to replace some parts from the laptop I was using. A few months later, I found an old monitor which I connected it to my laptop to create a smaller screen which helped me create designs which where going to be used later on in my life. One day, I came back from school and my mom told me that laptop stopped working and it was because the battery or the screen stopped working. 1 year later, I bought a micro computer which I used to try to learn some coding and to play some games but I found out that it was having many problems and it was lacking many qualities. I sold that micro computer, it was a C.H.I.P. , for $40 dollars to friend hoping to replace it but instead I wasted on some Lego pieces as I am also trying to invent new robots with the pieces. So today, I am still searching for a new computer and I am trying to create my first video game which I am hoping to use to be my first game in my future computer.

    I have always been fascinated with electronics, design, and simply how stuff worked ever since I was a child. My uncle worked for an electronics repair shop, something you don't really see anymore. Every year for Christmas, I'd always get some sort of Electronics project kit from him. It always excited me how I could follow the schematics and put wires between the springs with the different resistors, capacitors, and devices to make a piezo piano pressing the different buttons, crystal radio, lighting the LED and other things. Mind you at the time, I never even heard of a micro-controller, or at least maybe it wasn't popular then. There was no such thing as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or Beaglebone Black then. I never fully understood how it worked, but I knew it fascinated me anyways. I always had a habbit of taking apart all of my electronic toys just to see what made them tick. Mind you, at the time, I had no idea once I took them apart, that I wasn't getting them back together, but that didn't stop me.

     

    When I turned 17, I was given an awesome opportunity. During my Summer break I was able to spend the summer at my grandmother's house and I would go to work with my Uncle at the repair shop. It was there, where he put down a broken TV and had me trace down the problem. I was by no means an expert, but I started to learn how to solder and desolder, how to properly test components and where to look to diagnose circuitry. Wasn't still fully grasping it like I should but I got that TV up and running.

     

    After that summer break however, all of that had to go dormant, I was nearing the end of my high school life and beginning to have to decide what to do in my adulthood. Don't quite think I made the right choices there though. Didn't pursue a college education like I should have, I decided I was going to wait a few years which I found out wouldn't work. Life isn't so kind if you don't set your career path out when you have the chance. It wasn't until years later that my electronics interest would really spark off.

     

    I was searching through Youtube. Already bored of World of Warcraft, I was watching some videos of "Cool Products" that been coming out, and usually Youtube has a good habit of introducing related videos. One of such videos mentioned using an Arduino, which at the time, I have never heard of before. So I started looking into it, found the Arduino website looked at what they had, different things they could do and the fact that you programmed them using a regular compiler with C. Programming was another passion I had since I was growing up, starting from BASIC with the Commodore 64 up into learning how to program in C with Visual Studio later. So when I found out, I could wire circuits together and program them to boot, I was in hog heaven. So I bought me a few Arduinos and some starter shields which quite honestly didn't really enthuse me. So I bought a bunch of breadboards and a bunch of different passives and IC's. eBay sellers made a killing off of me. I was getting packages in every other day. I kept watching different videos and gathered more ideas on what to build, from temperature sensors for my house, to home automation designs, LED Cubes, and even a shield I designed in Eagle to power a 7" touch screen off a Arduino Due. I have a blog about this project, mind you, it's not finished. I kinda put it in the dormant que for the time being until I spark my interest into continuing the firmware for it.

     

    The more I watched on Youtube, the more Tech designers and engineers I came across. To include "The Ben Heck Show!" which ultimately brought me here. After binge watching his episodes, I started to explore the site and discovered more what it had to offer. I was ecstatic to see all the webinars, blogs, and posts about so many different topics. And some of the projects I found. I said to myself, I got to build that, and that.... I didn't build it yet, but by golly, I've already got it in my mind that I must add it to my project list. Then I found out what a Raspberry Pie was and had to aqcuire me a few of them, which currently consists of 1 A, 5 2Bs, and 4 3's. I've used them to create Octopie Servers for a currently only 1 3D printer I got off kickstarter, my own Retro Arcade Machine which is hooked up to the TV and a few other projects to include a tablet when they came out with the PiScreen.

     

    I further drooled when I saw that Element 14 had a Road Test section. Even applied to a few of them.... I never got picked. But it was awesome none the less.

     

    Currently, I have expanded my electronics enthusiasm to Board design, firmware design, uController and FPGA design and layout, and 3D printing and slowly into 3D milling and engraving. I still have a long way to go, but I feel I have also came along way from that 9 year old boy receiving his first electronics kit. And I have my Uncle to mainly thank. As well as the various engineers and designers who took the time to post videos on youtube about their projects and Element 14 and the Ben Heck Show.

    My love of electronics began when I was about 10. I had a lot of time on my hands as both of my parents worked so I was left pretty much unsupervised every afternoon when I got home from school and before my parents got off work. TV would get boring and my homework wasn't that hard so I had to find a way to occupy myself for a few hours.  It started with the TV remote.  I would get the screwdriver from the drawer-where-you-put-things-when-you-don't-know-where-else-they-should-go and disassemble the remote as completely as I could.  I could spend hours looking at all the resistors and following the lines in the circuit board.  Eventually I turned it into a game! I would see how deep I could go into the remote, how many pieces it could become and then reassemble it before my folks got home. 

     

    I graduated from the remote to the VCR, then the DVD player, phone, alarm clock, printer... I loved getting into a thing and figuring out how everting worked. My curiosity was sparked and I fanned the flame as much as I could.  I was eventually found out by my mom.  I came clean about how long I had being tinkering with the house hold appliances and instead of grounding me, she drive me to radio shack and bought me a book on electronics and a volt meter. She made me promise to only tinker with things that were already broken. 

     

    Since that day, I've had thousands of phenomenal adventures.  Each one is filled with frustrations, insight, and joy.  I'm a teacher now and I do my best to spread that curiosity and tenacity to my students, keeping in mind what my mother taught me that day.  That it's okay to explore and have questions, just don't break the coffee maker.

    My curious nature led me to my love of electronics.  My trusting hoarder of an uncle was renting a room from my parents and utilizing every cubic foot to store towering and seemingly disorganized stacks of random useful and trivial things. The room, so different from my own sparse toy and clothing strewn room, proved too powerful for my twelve-year-old self to resist and I began regularly visiting his room while he was out and inspecting the heaps for interesting treasures. I vividly remember the day I noticed a RadioShack 200-in-1 electronics lab. I concocted a reason to use the computer he had in his room (not hard, since this was 1996 and my own family did not yet own a computer) and while he was helping me set it up, I worked up the nerve to ask him about the lab. He let me borrow it, and for weeks I built the circuits out of the book. Looking back, as a child who was not excelling in any school subject and regularly avoided homework, it is easy to see this was the beginning of a passion. And admittedly, although it took a while for me to realize the term “ground” wasn’t literal, I somehow managed to connect all the ground wires to the same nail I drove into the patch of dirt (my interpretation of ground) near the porch and my love of electronics survived.

     

        Taught to follow my passion, I lept into my first career as an electrician right after highschool. Electrical construction was certainly interesting and worth it for a while, but my interest waned with the increasing commutes, hours and lack of actual application of electrical theory. Around this time I came across a Maker magazine and saw what fun could be had with an Arduino. The Arduino combined my new found interest in programming and my old interest in electronics. I bought an Arduino starter kit ASAP and began to learn in the limited time I had around having my first child and overtime at work.

     

        I’ve since switched careers to one more in line with my interests and my family has grown by another child. Despite having two children and a full time job, I still make time for my passion by fitting in occasional online class and Arduino project. Discovering my passion has been a life-long journey and my wife and I are continuing on that journey by making time to incorporate the things we love into the time we have. We are raising a family of makers and encouraging the love of learning, experimentation, and discovery.

    It all started with my father's home computer. It was fun to mess around with it. One day, after seeing Scientific Linux on his laptop, I also wanted to try that "Linux thing". First installed on a USB stick, then as dualboot on the computer's hard disk, it made me discover programming - first in Java, then in C. Then I found out about the Raspberry Pi at an special open-entry Pi event at my father's workplace, and I was able to get one, a Model B+. I moved on to trying some Python, and running a fully functional Minecraft server on the Pi.

    However, the biggest turn was when a mandatory week of work experience came at school. I managed to get a place at my father's workplace, in the electronic lab. There, I was assigned the task of making a simple Python script for the Raspberry Pi to read temperatures off of two ADT7410 I2C temperature sensor "probes" (one was the chip located on the Raspberry Pi protoboard, the other was the chip dangling on four wires). This was really the moment I knew electronics was my passion: drawing a circuit layout, debugging the communication with an oscilloscope - I was very interested in all of those elements. While I wasn't able to solder the tiny SOIC footprints, I admired the skills of my work experience tutor.

    After that, I did some homemade electronics project for the Pi, such as adding LEDs or adding an RTC chip (DS1337) with a battery backup.

    About a year ago, I started my first "big" electronics project - making a smartwatch with a Cortex-M3 microcontroller, Bluetooth LE and a low powered LCD. The project is still in its "experimental" stage, but I am happy to have a working PCB with the microcontroller responding over JTAG.

    Finally, this year, I started studying electronics at university. It's definitely not an easy subject, but it is truly fascinating. Seeing the ESA's Rosetta Mission and all the engineering behind it only made me more excited about the future - a future I hope to be part of.
