Every great love affair starts somewhere.  Did the sparks fly the moment of your first encounter with anything related to engineering or technology?image

 

Maybe you found it dull and boring at first? Did your mind go numb as you listened to concepts too complicated to understand and numbers too overwhelming to compute? Did your love blossom slowly over time, as you discovered layer upon layer of depth, becoming arrested by incomprehensible beauty, as you longingly gazed into the abyss of a perfect alignment of mathematical symmetry and artistic harmony?

 

Did it begin with an exchange of gifts?  Engineering and technology, as you know, offers many tantalizing gifts. Did you have a moment together?  A moment that would change the rest of your life forever!

The end of the year is a time for giving and reflection. Gifts are exchanged, resolutions are made, and you look back on the past. You may even reach further and think of the pivotal moments that led you in the current direction of your life.

 

Whether its the gift of an experience, the gift of a piece of hardware or software, the gift of an idea or a person who inspired you, think of a gift that influenced you to pursue engineering & technology.

 

Here are some examples of the gifts that led others to give back:

 

The Gift of Wonder

 

Steve Wozniak, widely credited as the inventor of the Personal Computer, gave an interview where he credits a journal he found in a hall closet for his interest in engineering and technology: "...I found a journal in a hall closet with descriptions of binary numbering, logic gates and storage devices....When I discovered a 9-year old could understand this stuff I knew it would be my passion forever."image

 

An engineer may not get or even want attention for their accomplishments, its their job, to make things work even if it means pushing technology as far as it goes, making the seemingly impossible, possible. A good deal of selflessness is required in engineering, which in its way makes it sound a lot like giving.  For an engineer like Wozniak, it opened up a world of wonder for him that would change the world forever!

The Gift of the Whole Brain

 

Many of the skills required to be a good engineer are well known and have been talked about a lot.  A lot of formal training in math and science is required to develop the rational thinking and logic required to solve real world problems. Not only are you expected to solve complex problems, you are asked to implement solutions in cost effective and practical ways.This brings us to another prized trait in engineers; the ability to think creatively. The ability to think big and use your imagination is highly valued, especially when it comes to solving complicated problems that may involve monetary or feasibility concerns. Anyone that has ever worked in tech knows you have to work within the constraints of the technology of the given time and even a perfect product will be obsolete before you know it.image

 

Although mostly known as one of the great artist, there's perhaps no better exemplier what can be accomplished in engineering using a whole-brain approach than Leonardo Di Vinci: "To develop a complete mind: study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else."  In addition to being an accomplished architectural engineer, Da Vinci's investigation of human anatomy helped lay the early foundation of the biomedical engineering field.image

The Gift of Diversity

 

In a world ruled by seemingly arbitrary lines. Engineering and technology follow the laws of physics and if you can master those laws and bend technology to your will, you find it's the product of your work that matters and this gives opportunity to people from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.  The appeal of technology and engineering for people in all corners of the world is that regardless of your gender, race, family, background, or social status, your contribution has value because of where you come from. That is why some of the great technology companies and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) educators are at the forefront of recognizing the need to promote a diverse and inclusive environment.image

 

Engineers and technologists recognize the value diversity brings to the work they are able to accomplish, if you are going to invent and innovate solutions that solve the needs of everyone you're only going to succeed by bringing in diverse perspectives. Education in engineering is now focused on being more diverse because, as explained in an article about the changing face of engineering education, that drives innovation.

 

The Gift of Curiosity

 

Once you understand the mathematical and mechanistic way everything works you open doors, that lead you to other doors, that lead to still more doors. Engineers use quantitative analysis to understand and model the world around them. They witness the interplay between science and technology, how science advances technology, and vice versa. In a profile on Live Science, Maurizio Porfiri, who holds a PH.D. in engineering mechanics credits the literature he read growing up for the curiosity needed to excel in engineering: "Being creative and being curious is more important than being the smartest or best at equations if you want to be a great engineer or researcher."image

 

Porfiri was included in Popular Science's Brilliant 10 in 2012, an elite group of scientists under 40 who stands to dramatically impact their field, despite being a self-described "okay student" as well as the recipient of the 2008 NSF Career Award.  In engineering and technology, curiosity is what drives you to learn new programming languages, experiment with new systems, and come up with novel solutions to solve problems.

The Gift of a Better Tomorrow

 

There are many pressing needs in the world in fields like technology including energy, sustainability, transportation, education, healthcare, food, and the environment. While a goal of many disciplines in science is to understand reality, the ultimate goal of engineering and technology is to create a better tomorrow that leaves the world a better a place.image

 

The work of engineers is everywhere.  In hospitals and clinics there is manufacturing pharmaceuticals, designing intravenous infusion pumps, programming electronic medical records. Biomedical engineers are as much a part of patient care as nurses and physicians. Meanwhile, mechanical engineers contribute to transportation; environmental engineers contribute to sustainability and energy; and electrical engineers contribute to communications.

 

The Gift of Generosity

 

Perhaps the greatest gift of engineering and technology is that it can not only make life more comfortable for everyone, but it can also save lives. An understanding of engineering and technology can be used to serve the public and address global challenges by putting you in a position to help others using your skills.  Environmental Engineer Lilia Abron, founder of Peer Consultants and Peer Africa, credits the book Silent Sprint by Rachel Carson, as the inspiration behind her sanitary engineering vocation.image

 

Lilia Abron runs a program that unifies energy efficiency and sustainable housing construction, along with economic development, to create sustainable human settlements.  She tells her alumni bulletin: "It bothered me to see people living without any power to change their lives, and government funds being wasted by construction companies just trying to make money. I told my business partner, 'I know how to solve this.'" The book Silent Spring, first published in 1962, is also the inspiration for the environmental movement that led to the EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency).image

The Gift that Kept On Giving

 

There's perhaps no better way to succeed in life than to love what you do because then you'll never you'll never "work" a day in your life. Educators are finding that key to developing children's interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) may lie in making STEM applicable to everyday life, making it more interesting and hands on, and emphasizing the process over results. If you developed a love for Science, Technology, and Math you could probably point to examples in your life that fall into one of those categories.  It could be a HEATH kit you received when you were a child, your first computer, working with your Dad in the garage, a science fair, or any number of experiences that you can point to as having influenced your love for engineering or technology.

    My Electronics story started with a 1.5v serial bulb & a battery which I took from a street corner ..  then moved to motors , then some cars , it evolved as I grow .. Finally I chose to study Electronics Engineering .. First atmel become my favorite controller , Now addicted to ARM OS porting .. Some day I will become a great scientist .. image

    My love for technology and electronics began when I was around 10 back in the early 80s, it was more from the curiosity of how things worked. I would pull apart my toys or old radios etc. that were laying around the house. My early attempts at putting them back together quite often failed, but as the years went on I became more competent at pulling things apart to investigate what was inside and them putting them back together working. Fast forward 30 odd years and I now work as a technician in the Amusement industry repairing PCBs, PCs, electromechanical equipment, monitor chassis, LCD screens etc.  I think the curiosity of looking inside things in my early years has helped with my current job, there is usually very little paperwork supplied from manufacturers of arcade amusement equipment, so for most of the time I am blindly investigating faults to repair.

    I actually wanted to be a baseball player when I was little instead of an engineer. Or a park ranger (my interests were oddly varied) and I thought that computers, electronics, etc. were just for fun. However, my parents wanted me to have a more stable career and thought I'd be suited to it so one year for my birthday, they found what I guess would be a precursor to Snap Circuits. I played with it a bit, but quickly grew bored and took to playing with the children's compound bow I also got. This went on for months until summer rolled around and I knew we'd be spending all day outside with little shade. In a desperate attempt to help stay cool, I took the parts and made a handheld fan. Super simple, I know, but I thought it was the coolest thing. After that came years of building toy cars, followed by remote control cars, then little robots and that took me into higher level software engineering too. All because I was hot and wanted a cool fan I didn't have to wave.

    "My Love Affair" With Electronics


    I have loved Electronics, since I was a kid. I learned how to fix my Transited Radio, that I got for my Birthday (back in the 60's). By heating up the Cracked or Loose Solder Joints on it's Board, with my Weller Soldering Gun - Iron (inherited form my Dad). When my Radio or Walki Talki or Train Set Controller... Stopped Working or only worked intermittently. I figured this out, just by inspecting the Board and by moving and shaking it around a bit. If it made any noise or if the speaker began working. Then I figured that there must be something loose inside. So, as I did with everything... I took it apart to see what was inside:) Re-Soldering the joints, would usually make them work again. If you held it and your tongue just right, that is;) It was quite exciting to be able to fix my Beloved AM Transistor Radio and other toys, all by my self!:) Growing up I had a Reel to Reel Tape Recorder and a Realistic Cassette Recorder. Which I figured out how to Wire a Big Speaker to. By connecting it to the Speaker wires inside. Or by wiring up my own 1/8 inch male plug to go into the Head Phone Jack (if equipped). Don't do this with a 1950's TV that has a big Transformer wired up to the Speaker. That thing runs on 110V AC! Not Low Voltage DC!:O It Blew my Speaker a Box that I made, trying that!:O I still have those two 1950's TV's in the Garage:) Our first TV and my MaMa and PaPa's too (Mamaw and Papaw, ok... Grandma and Grandpa;). And I had some, now Antique, Tube Radios. That I took apart and Discarded later. You, could often get those Tube Radios or HiFi Amps, working again. By wiggling or unplugging and plugging the Tubes Back in again. Sometimes they just weren't making a good connection, in the Socket. Too bad I thought those things were worthless, back then!:O I wanted to go to school for Electronics. But in Junior High, someone (a teacher if I remember right) told me that I had to be Good at Math to do that!:( I was not, good at math and still am not, good at math. In 1975, I saw a DOS PC, at our High School Job Fair. They guy showing it. Was trying to recruit, young people. To, go to School for Computers. He said, Computers were the coming thing. And they would soon be a Big Deal, in our Lives. I figured he was right. But, I didn't see my self remembering all of those DOS Commands. I did know how to type. I took a Typing Class, in Junior High. I almost bought a Radio Shack TRS80 Home Computer, in about 1983. But, decided, that $500, was a bit too much to spend on a toy. The myself or the kids, might only play with for a short time. In about 1992, I was introduced to Windows 3.1 and I liked it. I learned how to make Spread Sheets and Address Books, in MS Works. I did look around on the Internet, a bit, back then too. But, there was not allot to see. No Yahoo, Google and I didn't happen to even fine the Government Gopher Data Bases, at the time. So, I soon lost interest. And I didn't have a Computer or my own, at that time, either. But, since 1998. I have worked with Computers allot. Every day, in fact. I love to Install and Try out Linux Distros on Old and New PC's. My favorite Linux Distros are Fedora and Debian. Over the years, I've learned to trouble shoot hardware problems and build new Computers too. And I've really learned allot about Software. Both Windows and Linux. But, I'm not a Coder and Can't write Programs at all. I did take a free Python Programming Class, from Google, a few years ago. I learned a few basics. But, still not a programmer. So, I learn by installing and trying out, the Free and Open Source Code that others have Shared on the Internet. And maybe learn to do a few changes for my purposes too. I have also worked with allot of Audio Video Gear over the past 35+ years. Mostly in the Operation and Installation Areas. I mixed for Concerts for 13 years. I installed Telco Equipment for a year in 2000. That was a good Paid Learning Adventure:) I did AC Electrical Trouble Shooting as a Maintenance Mechanic for Buildings. And I'm pretty good with DC wiring in Cars too. So now, with the coming up of Open Source Software. Which I have been heavily into, since 2005. I've also discovered Open Source Hardware. And I am really wanting to learn about Micro Circuits and Prototype Boards. I read about these projects almost every day. I've seen many types of Prototyping Boards used in some very interesting Projects. From TI’s MSP430 Launchpad, STMicroelectronic’s Discovery, The BeagleBoard, to the ever popular Arduino and Raspberry Pi. I'm really still, in the research and discovery mode now. Figuring out What Development Board to would be best for me to learn with. And which Projects I would like to do and can do...

    One of my Projects...  Building a Bench Top Power Supply without altering the ATX PSU and Making a 24v Power Supply with 2 - 12v Power Supplies


    I have 2 Computer Power Supplies (PSU's) that I hooked together in Series to make a variable Voltage Power Supply. Going from 3 volts to 24 Volts DC. In Positive and Negative Ground, either way. But, it just sits under my Desk. Without an Enclose. With wires going everywhere. And it would be difficult to even move it, without the connections falling apart. Since my Resistors and Wiring Connections are just Bare Wires jammed into the Connectors. It works, just fine. But, I would like to do something like what Chris Osborn has done in this Project. His, enclosure is made of Wood. And it was fast and easy to build. He had Dado's in his pieces to make it easy to slide in the Front Panel or even replace it later, when he makes changes. I'm not sure if he cut his own Dado's. But, looks to me like some Pre-Made Drawer Stock would make this job even easier.       This is a Review, which quickly turned into a larger than expected Project. The XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle from Element14.com Review and First Experience by me, Don Bishop. When I first saw the Road Test on Element14.com for the The XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. I almost didn't apply. I didn't have a Raspberry Pi. Though, I have been wanting one, since before they came out. I had followed the Pi's Progress, since I first read about it. When it was still in the development phase. But, still didn't have one, at the time. I have been wanting to setup an XBMC Computer for my Mom to watch Web Shows on her TV, for a long time. I have a few older PC's that would work just fine for the task. But, they all need more memory, which cost more money. And one, doesn't even have a AGP Video connector. So, it would need a PCI Video Card, to be able to connect it to a TV. And that's the one that I really would like to use. Since, I am using the other one my self, as a backup computer. So, with the price of the Raspberry Pi being low. And the built in Composite and HDMI Video Outputs. As well as a Stereo Analog Audio output. Her TV is a Big, older Standard Analog TV. She does have one LDC TV. But it is a small 15 inch, which is in her Bedroom. And I have already bought an HDMI Cable to hook up her computer in her room to that TV. I Just need to find my Round Tuit and hook that thing up;) So, the purchase of the Raspberry Pi, seemed reasonable. Instead of buying memory for the older PC's. So, I signed up for the Road Test. Deciding, that, if I were chosen to do the Review. I would go ahead and buy the Pi. And low and behold... I was chosen!:) Thanks so much Element14!:) I have done a couple of other Road Tests. Here, Beginners View of the TI 430Boost-CC110L AIR Module BoosterPack Kit. And here, Beginners Guide to The TI MSP-EXP430FR5739 Experimenter Board. And I wanted to do especially well on this Road Test. I hadn't done any Videos, in the past. Because I didn't have a Video Camera. I only had two old Web Cams, with very low Resolution. I've used them to make videos, before. But, don't like the low resolution video quality. But, since my last Road Tests. I was given a Laptop, that was broken. I fixed it and it has a fairly decent, built in Web Cam. So, I set out to do Video as I went, during my Testing and Building or Reworking of an Enclosure for the Pi. I spent as much time as I could. Since I received the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle from Element14, on doing this Project and making my video as I went. Well, of course making videos. Takes allot more time. And just as soon as you start a task, that has any kind of Deadline. Unusual things come up and get in the way. So, at the present time. I am about half finished with altering an old broken HDTV Tuner Box, to be my Raspberry Pi Enclosure. But, I have done ample Testing and Setup on the XBMC Raspberry Pi Solution Bundle. I have four Videos Edited and uploaded, as of 10-21-13. With several more to come. Long Video Warnings here. I did my best to Edit down the rough videos, to make them, watchable videos. I spent a week on Editing just the first three videos and I' still going. Not to mention the time it took to make them in the first place. But, I just couldn't bring my self to cut out all of the pertinent info, that I worked so hard to put in these videos.     I was always interested in Electronics.  Probably most inspired by Star Trek and Road Runner (I so wanted to work for ACME, and make those black holes, rocket backpacks, etc).  My Dad was a technician at the Alameda Air Force base, and was willing to let me tinker and tear apart anything that was broken.  I build all the Archer Kits (Radio Shack) that I could afford, and started with the Basic Electricity books that were put out by the Navy for training back in WWII.  Those books were written for the young men from farms and cities to understand the basics of electricity, by giving examples of water in plumbing, basketballs, etc.  Extremely practical day to day concepts led to core concepts of electricity and magnetism. Magazines such as Popular Electronics, Radio Electronics, etc further fulled my learn and build hobby.

     

    I have been able to design and work on pacemaker test equipment, printers, surgical tools, semiconductor machines (polishers and grinders), power supplies, and food processing equipment.  My programming started in 8088 assembly code, progressing to basic (PDP11 with punch cards and punch tape), to FORTRAN 77, C, LabVIEW, Ladder, Structured Text, etc.  Microcontrollers have been a blast, coming from the 8 bit world of the 8051, to today's Arduinos, PiCs, PIs, etc.  Plenty of fun ahead, I'm sure.  Wireless technology has also been fun, and way more economical than in the past.

    I could talk all about Lego or robotics competitions (and I'll get to those), but I want to talk about some people instead.

     

    The first is my fourth grade teacher, who made me realize I could enjoy math, but it wasn't like I had bad math teachers before and she changed it for me. Really I had just been going through school on autopilot, not really liking or disliking any of my classes, just doing. She mentioned once somewhat offhand "the classes [I] enjoy, like math". which made me realize that I really could enjoy school and math in particular.

     

    The second person is my mother, who turned my love of Lego into something new. She discovered FIRST Lego League. She then procedded to drive me across the city twice a week for a year while we went to another family's house for meetings, then gave up an entire room in the house (and at least two days a week) for the next three while we hosted the meetings ourselves.

     

    The third person is my father, from whom I inhereted the tinkerer genes. Car work and house maintenance were always the big two that we worked on together, but he's always been one to take things apart and fix them rather than replacing them. He was also for many years (and still sometimes today) the first person I would go to when I needed to know what methods to use when modifying my Nerf blasters. He also told me a story recently about when I was little (I don't remember any of this) how he would sit me on his lap, open up a car magazine, and ask me to identify engine components.

         My adventure in science and engineering started when i was about 4 or 5 and me and my dad sat around connecting any batteries we could find around the house to little speakers, LED's, and motors. This really got me interested, and for the next couple years, whenever I was bored, I would get some batteries and some LED's, motors, switches, and speakers, and just play around with them, no real goal in mind.

         Around 5th grade, we were assigned to research anything we wanted and make a presentation about it. As it so happened, just a couple days ago, I had been on a laptop and wondering how it used electricity to store information. It really baffled me, how an idea, could be stored with a physical object. Naturally, I made my presentation on how microprocessors and RAM actually worked. After researching this, my life was really changed. I moved away from watching pointless YouTube videos in my free time to coding and learning more about computers.

         I started coding things like small websites with my new knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I then moved on to programming TI calculators with BASIC that I learned along the way, but I really couldn't get what I wanted out of programming, because I couldn't really control actual things like Ben Heck could (I loved the Ben Heck Show but it never really occurred to me to do a Google search on I/O pins for some reason).

         When I got my first Raspberry Pi, I was so happy. It was all I ever needed in a computer. It had a decent OS, some memory, but best of all, THE PINS! GPIO pins were they missing puzzle piece in my electronics "career". It combined my two favorite parts of electronics, computers, and circuitry. I could finally use computers to control real life things.

         At some point, I was doing projects that really didn't need an OS like the RPI did, but needed more I/O pins. This is where I started to use Arduinos and more complex PCB's and MCU's.

         Now, don't think I'm saying that my engineering story stops here, but after starting to use Arduinos, nothing really major has happened in my so called "career". I'm hoping that the next big milestone will be college. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

    I got into Electronics in the 1960's as a toddler when the Masonite back of our Black and White TV was off.

    I saw pretty glass tubes and pulled them all out to play with them.

     

    Also as a toddler I wondered how a power point worked so I inserted a wire between the two top sockets and flipped the switch to find that wire went on fire.

    Amazing!

     

    Half a century later we find that this experiment is still done frequently although involuntarily with mobile phones that spontaneously burst into flames.

    I was 6... my dad brought home a computer that looked like a giant suitcase... he said it was portable - I laughed - and was hooked.  Perhaps I have more to thank my father for - he refused to purchase any type of gaming machine.  It had to have a keyboard to use for programming - so Atari 400, 800, 600XL, Apple II, and then PC's were the route I ended up taking.  Programming languages were fun to learn - from simple math to more complex graphics, and pointers got me going.

    I took this through grade school and then kind of lost touch a little when I went to university.  I still had a strong interest in programming, but ended up going down a path for network administration and support.  I still enjoyed building my white box PC's - and took every opportunity to fiddle and upgrade... but got busy when it came time to programming.  And then along came the Pi.

    I recently received my first Pi as a gift - and am very much looking forward to playing with it, doing some robotics stuff with my son - who is now old enough to start appreciating this kind of stuff.  Tinkerers are celebrating everywhere with the introduction of controller boards, and computers that are meant to be played with, experimented with, explored!  I can't wait to reignite my passion for hardware, and programming to see where it will lead me!
