What's the Gift that Led You to Give Back?

 

Gift us the story of your love for engineering & technology!

 

Every great love affair starts somewhere.  Did the sparks fly the moment of your first encounter with anything related to engineering or technology?image

 

Maybe you found it dull and boring at first? Did your mind go numb as you listened to concepts too complicated to understand and numbers too overwhelming to compute? Did your love blossom slowly over time, as you discovered layer upon layer of depth, becoming arrested by incomprehensible beauty, as you longingly gazed into the abyss of a perfect alignment of mathematical symmetry and artistic harmony?

 

Did it begin with an exchange of gifts?  Engineering and technology, as you know, offers many tantalizing gifts. Did you have a moment together?  A moment that would change the rest of your life forever!

The end of the year is a time for giving and reflection. Gifts are exchanged, resolutions are made, and you look back on the past. You may even reach further and think of the pivotal moments that led you in the current direction of your life.

 

Whether its the gift of an experience, the gift of a piece of hardware or software, the gift of an idea or a person who inspired you, think of a gift that influenced you to pursue engineering & technology.

 

Here are some examples of the gifts that led others to give back:

 

The Gift of Wonder

 

Steve Wozniak, widely credited as the inventor of the Personal Computer, gave an interview where he credits a journal he found in a hall closet for his interest in engineering and technology: "...I found a journal in a hall closet with descriptions of binary numbering, logic gates and storage devices....When I discovered a 9-year old could understand this stuff I knew it would be my passion forever."image

 

An engineer may not get or even want attention for their accomplishments, its their job, to make things work even if it means pushing technology as far as it goes, making the seemingly impossible, possible. A good deal of selflessness is required in engineering, which in its way makes it sound a lot like giving.  For an engineer like Wozniak, it opened up a world of wonder for him that would change the world forever!

The Gift of the Whole Brain

 

Many of the skills required to be a good engineer are well known and have been talked about a lot.  A lot of formal training in math and science is required to develop the rational thinking and logic required to solve real world problems. Not only are you expected to solve complex problems, you are asked to implement solutions in cost effective and practical ways.This brings us to another prized trait in engineers; the ability to think creatively. The ability to think big and use your imagination is highly valued, especially when it comes to solving complicated problems that may involve monetary or feasibility concerns. Anyone that has ever worked in tech knows you have to work within the constraints of the technology of the given time and even a perfect product will be obsolete before you know it.image

 

Although mostly known as one of the great artist, there's perhaps no better exemplier what can be accomplished in engineering using a whole-brain approach than Leonardo Di Vinci: "To develop a complete mind: study the science of art; study the art of science. Learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else."  In addition to being an accomplished architectural engineer, Da Vinci's investigation of human anatomy helped lay the early foundation of the biomedical engineering field.image

The Gift of Diversity

 

In a world ruled by seemingly arbitrary lines. Engineering and technology follow the laws of physics and if you can master those laws and bend technology to your will, you find it's the product of your work that matters and this gives opportunity to people from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses.  The appeal of technology and engineering for people in all corners of the world is that regardless of your gender, race, family, background, or social status, your contribution has value because of where you come from. That is why some of the great technology companies and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) educators are at the forefront of recognizing the need to promote a diverse and inclusive environment.image

 

Engineers and technologists recognize the value diversity brings to the work they are able to accomplish, if you are going to invent and innovate solutions that solve the needs of everyone you're only going to succeed by bringing in diverse perspectives. Education in engineering is now focused on being more diverse because, as explained in an article about the changing face of engineering education, that drives innovation.

 

The Gift of Curiosity

 

Once you understand the mathematical and mechanistic way everything works you open doors, that lead you to other doors, that lead to still more doors. Engineers use quantitative analysis to understand and model the world around them. They witness the interplay between science and technology, how science advances technology, and vice versa. In a profile on Live Science, Maurizio Porfiri, who holds a PH.D. in engineering mechanics credits the literature he read growing up for the curiosity needed to excel in engineering: "Being creative and being curious is more important than being the smartest or best at equations if you want to be a great engineer or researcher."image

 

Porfiri was included in Popular Science's Brilliant 10 in 2012, an elite group of scientists under 40 who stands to dramatically impact their field, despite being a self-described "okay student" as well as the recipient of the 2008 NSF Career Award.  In engineering and technology, curiosity is what drives you to learn new programming languages, experiment with new systems, and come up with novel solutions to solve problems.

The Gift of a Better Tomorrow

 

There are many pressing needs in the world in fields like technology including energy, sustainability, transportation, education, healthcare, food, and the environment. While a goal of many disciplines in science is to understand reality, the ultimate goal of engineering and technology is to create a better tomorrow that leaves the world a better a place.image

 

The work of engineers is everywhere.  In hospitals and clinics there is manufacturing pharmaceuticals, designing intravenous infusion pumps, programming electronic medical records. Biomedical engineers are as much a part of patient care as nurses and physicians. Meanwhile, mechanical engineers contribute to transportation; environmental engineers contribute to sustainability and energy; and electrical engineers contribute to communications.

 

The Gift of Generosity

 

Perhaps the greatest gift of engineering and technology is that it can not only make life more comfortable for everyone, but it can also save lives. An understanding of engineering and technology can be used to serve the public and address global challenges by putting you in a position to help others using your skills.  Environmental Engineer Lilia Abron, founder of Peer Consultants and Peer Africa, credits the book Silent Sprint by Rachel Carson, as the inspiration behind her sanitary engineering vocation.image

 

Lilia Abron runs a program that unifies energy efficiency and sustainable housing construction, along with economic development, to create sustainable human settlements.  She tells her alumni bulletin: "It bothered me to see people living without any power to change their lives, and government funds being wasted by construction companies just trying to make money. I told my business partner, 'I know how to solve this.'" The book Silent Spring, first published in 1962, is also the inspiration for the environmental movement that led to the EPA (US Environmental Protection Agency).image

The Gift that Kept On Giving

 

There's perhaps no better way to succeed in life than to love what you do because then you'll never you'll never "work" a day in your life. Educators are finding that key to developing children's interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) may lie in making STEM applicable to everyday life, making it more interesting and hands on, and emphasizing the process over results. If you developed a love for Science, Technology, and Math you could probably point to examples in your life that fall into one of those categories.  It could be a HEATH kit you received when you were a child, your first computer, working with your Dad in the garage, a science fair, or any number of experiences that you can point to as having influenced your love for engineering or technology.

    From a young age I was always interested in electronics and taking things apart and fixing the things that were faulty. I guess it was an electronics kit that started my interest sometime in the 60's the sort that has jumper wires and springs to wire in individual components. Turing point in my working career came when I built a radio control tx/rx that I could not quite get to work properly as the transmitter was generating all sorts of wideband interference. So I went to a local 2 way radio business to see if they could help. They must have been impressed as I was offered a job there and then. I then went on to become a manager in a cable tv company. so having electronics as a hobby has got me some interesting jobs. If I build a project it is always analog electronics as I never really got into using the likes of raspberry pi/Arduino etc. I feel like I may have missed out. Now there is so much stuff out there I don't realy know the best way to get into it. I retired early and I am still building projects and fixing things in my spare time. It is a great hobby to have and will always be useful.

    I think I would have to attribute my initial interest in electronics to the Ladybird book entitled "Learnabout... Simple Electronics"

    This book was first published in 1979, so I would have been 9 years old.

    My father gave me the book and put together a kit of all the parts needed for me to build all the circuits in the book, including making me the (literal) breadboard shown on the cover. (I love my dad so much)

    This book made my favourite word "Astable-multivibrator", which was so much better than any word Mary Poppins ever sang about.

    Thanks to my dad starting my interest in designing electronics, I have never had a boring day at work, I never had to work in a factory-job, or ever been poor since.

    Life has been good as a design engineer.

    I am not an engineer, I guess I am a hobbyist but I take my craft very seriously. “The Gift” I would describe as always being sure that if I did enough research and cared enough about a project I could make it happen. I could learn the things I need to learn, find the people I need to find and take a project task by task until completion regardless of the experience and knowledge gap between myself and a goal. It also helps knowing that there are supportive communities out there willing to help you with problems that arise. Element 14 has been an invaluable resource not only for parts but for support when I have run into a road block, If anything that an engineer or hobbyists in this community becomes at all consequential it will be because of communities like element 14 as well as other online resources that it was possible.

    My story is probably quite unique. A few years ago, I had a terrible accident and ended up with a head trauma that put an end to my professional career (Marketing) and any work opportunities. It took me a lot of effort and a long time to get where I am. I 'm still having memory, focus and constant fatigue issues (among many others). I'm always looking for challenges and ways to improve myself. Last month, I was looking for a way for my family to enjoy our music and films in all of the house on all our devices. Having very limited revenues, I was looking for the cheapest way to implement a media server. My research led me to the Element14 Raspberry Pi Plex Media server project. Through my readings, I've found out that the Raspberry Pi, was a good tool to learn programming and create various projects. I went from a very specific objective to a solution to my personal objectives. I will acquire some stuff to try all sorts of projects and challenge myself in learning new things, thanks to Element14 and the community.

    My adventure started with Dr. Brant, my high school Algebra II teacher, and the TI30.  The TI30 was new to the world and everyone had to have one.  One day in class, Doc Brant took one apart and told us how to turn it on by pushing three buttons simultaneously instead of using the ON button - just by looking at the circuit card.  I was amazed.  I was also stupid because I pushed the three buttons that he told us never to push.  That amazed me to the point where I started looking at the computer magazines.  It was all over from there.  Atari 800, 800XL, Amiga...  Now it's Arduino and Raspberry Pi.  I hope it never ends.

    I believe I told this story on e14 before, but here it goes anyway. I was always a bright student, just never really passionate or motivated. I had a natural talent for science and mathematics, but they were just subjects in school to me. When I finished high school I enrolled in Electrical Engineering at university and I lasted about 2 months before I dropped out. I was sick of more Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics that had no purpose or application; after all, I'd applied to Electrical Engineering, not Science (heavy sarcasm). So, after a year of studying music and a failed audition to a nice music school on the east coast of Canada, I'd found myself having to decide what to do with my life. I decided to enroll at a local community college in the Electronics Engineering Technology program. The program offered three areas of specialization - computer, telecommunications, and industrial electronics, and I thought the computer option would be a decent fit. As a bonus, the program was only 2 years!

     

    It was the first week of classes and I was in Math class, ugh. The instructor wheeled into the classroom a cart with some equipment on it before class started. He began his lecture ... Trigonometry ... again. Honestly, I'd grown tired of calculating the minimum angle a ladder of a given height could make against a 20 foot wall ... useless. After his lecture he paused and gave a talk, "Now, let me SHOW you why Trigonometry is important for you to learn". He then proceeded to connect the equipment he brought into the classroom to the wall socket. He turned the gear around and showed the class that a sine wave was being traced on the screen of the gear. Turns out, the gear was an oscilloscope and he was showing us the 60 Hz power lines signal. Then he said, "If you can't do trigonometry, then you can't do any of the math associated with the power grid". Something clicked inside me, and I started to make connections in my mind about the engineered world around me. I got a taste for learning with passion and motivation. Just over a decade later I obtained a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and I've never looked back.

    I was fascinated by electricity and electronics in Jr. High, got my first job (not working for Dad) in a local radio & TV shop.  I've never been able to shake the fascination since.  Anything electronic attracts me.  Today, much of it is tied to Amateur Radio, which provides avenues for most any branch of electronics, and returns some public service as well.

    I have always had a fascination for all things that magically seemed to "just work". In my childhood years I deconstructed pretty much anything and everything that moved, flashed, made a sound or otherwise had some kind of "magic" inside. Most of it never returned to working condition when I was finished, though. Strange...

     

    I got a Commodore 64 when I was about 13-14 yrs old, and got my fair share of gaming, pluss endless hours typing in basic program printouts from magazines I bought. The programs almost never ran as expected, though. Typos in the code, typos made by me - I don't know. But I never gave up. The next one is bound to work!

     

    When it was time for college, I applied to a business school and an small, private college for information technology. I was accepted at both, and had to decide. Without any ceremony or deep consideration I just decided to give IT a chance as a career. That was almost 29 years ago, and I am still here. Ironically I have worked the last 20+ years in the IT department at the business school that I was accepted into but never studied at.

     

    Ever since the first RPi was released, I have unconsciously collected them. I have at least one of each model, and each of them is in some "almost finished" state. They monitor environmental parameters (temp, hum, pressure) at home or in my boat, an SMS gateway, there's a Wifi probe in the collection (monitoring visible and invisible WLANs, SNI, channel usage, ping time). And there's a small home server etc, etc...

    My dad is to blame for that. I grew up in East Germany, where tinkering around and hacking stuff was quite common to improve things. I still remember the evening when my dad showed my family a small circuit which reacted to light. It was a small light-activated switch (with an LED even, being a rare thing back then), designed to turn on the "parking light" on our car during the night. I was astonished back then that he build it himself (many years later found it was a kit that he needed to solder, but still...), and even could explain to me how these "electronics" and "transistors" worked (I was maybe 6 or so back then, so it was kind of a miracle to me image. Some times later I found my dads electronics parts bin, and used it as toys (you could build fantastic space ships controls out of it...), and when they deemed me old enough my parents bought me a book about electronics, and I was allowed to use my dads soldering iron (fortunately my dad also taught me how to solder). My pocket money allowed to buy some parts and kits, and so the long journey started to where I'm today...

    The Radio Shack TRS-80 was a Christmas gift given to me when I was 10 years old.  My neighbor and I would type in programs from magazines and save them to a plain jane GE tape recorder that did the job.  I never became a computer programmer but never lost the love for electronics and tinkering.  I have always loved reading a manual.  When we got our first VCR, with the remote control attached by wire, I was the first to delve in and learn every aspect of its features.  To this day, at 48 years of age, I love delving into the new car's manual, the new appliance's manual or a new musical keyboard's manual. 

     

    10 years ago, I built my first my first modular computer and did not want to purchase an operating system.  I was already a huge fan of Open Source software.  i had been reading about Linux and decided to give Ubuntu a try.  I downloaded an image, burnt it and loaded my first Linux operating system.  Ubuntu has been my operating system of choice.  I have picked up some Debian coding here and there and decided to purchase a Raspberry Pi.  When the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B came out, with it's Quad Core Processor, I thought it was a no brainer to purchase it for a media center project in my living room.  I created an account with Element 14 and have not looked back.  Thank you for being a Raspberry Pi provider.

     

    I'm still learning coding.  I am very much an amateur.  However, I am constantly expanding my horizons, listening to Linux podcasts and online tutorials.
