PC Builder's Quiz

Yep, seen many computers with a single fan (or none), and the way the question is worded makes it sounds like it's an absolute.

In the department where I currently work, which is a software development department, we have a habit of not buying brand-name PCs but building them ourselves, so we can easily expand as we go along. It is curious when a new colleague joins the department and finds that she/he has to build the PC in order to start programming. Of course we help them. Many have never seen a PC inside, but all confess that they had always wanted to build one before. Those who develop for Apple devices are a separate species.

I remember when Hewlett Packard (at least I think it was them) decided to design cases with only one fan - it was at the exit - sucking air through the hot parts with some ducting. This design meant that the heat generated by the fan itself would not be blown into the case, but it would be exhausted with the rest of the hot air.

The question about the fans is just wrong and misleading. In my desktop box I have the following fans

power supply

rear case fan

a large fan is blowing in over the Hard Drive Cage

and most if not all ways leave the side OFF. 

In my VME rack, there are two or three fans that blow in and up over the VME rack in which the cards are mounted vertically. and there is one on the power supply blowing out. 

No PC case is built currently as the motherboard is just in the way with a lot of hot spots. CPU, DRAM, Graphics Card, and no real way to cool the system. You need moving air over the parts and most of the time there is not.

Good quiz. I learned about using 2 fans... After some researching found out that one fans works but causes more dust build up. Finally understood why my PC gets so dirty. Time to add a new fan now

Yup. We used to have users that "only used it when it was cold in the morning", then complained that their machine was running slow...

Your case would have been ideal for them.

Sometimes I wish it was still there though. I'm currently running some 80's software that relied heavily on having the fixed 4.77MHz clock for its program timing.

Do you remember the "Turbo" button?  I remember one case with a Turbo button that just changed some LEDs on the front of the case without any connection to the motherboard.  You could also change some jumpers inside to have the digits display whatever number from 1-99 when the button was pressed.

I've got one PC with 8 fans in it, 2 on top, 2 on bottom 2 on the graphics card, and 2 on the power supply.  The air doesn't know if it's coming or going...

I have to say I needed to look up what DDR stood for.......
