I'm looking for a whole house surge protector (ie 2 x 120vac). The units avail use MOVs and are good for only one substantial surge. Is there anything better on the market?

Hi Marty,
Welcome to E-14. What type of surges are you experiencing? Do you have equipment that is being damaged? What is the source of the surges if you know? Typically MOVs are good for spikes that are of relatively short duration and will handle many spikes before they begin to deteriorate. I have the situation where my lights dim a bit when some appliances are turned on. A MOV will not help with this problem which is caused by load being added to the circuit and inherent resistance in the house's wiring.

Hi John
Tks for the reply.
This is about my cottage in the woods. The surges never occur when we are there, so I can't give you any details, but yes, we are getting equipment damage.
Can you specify what I need or recommend a typical unit?

What you need I believe is called a gas discharge tube. Google littlefuse_gdt_catalog.pdf for an excellent source of information on gas discharge tubes.
