DSP v MCU v FPGA

Are hybrid DSP/MCUs just a fad or here to stay?  Has the DSP had its day when a DSC with a PLD can do the job as well?

Programmable Logic Device like FPGA can integrate DSP and MCU core. Theoretically, it can take the place of DSP and MCU. Altera and Xilinx had launched their SOPC (System on a Programmable Chip) which integrates DSP and PowerPC core or ARM IP core.

Actually, the hybrid DSP and MCU such as OMAP of TI, Blackfin of ADI, and other ASIC SoCs integrate much more analog circuits (AD and DA Convertor). With the advantage of lower cost and lower power consumption than FPGA, it is not likely to be replaced by FPGA in a short term.

And now, single MCU, DSP or FPGA can not meet the demands of all kinds of products. The hybrid solution of DSP, MCU and FPGA is the ideal solution and it is the primary trend in the market.
