Spiders, scorpions, zombies, and now robot snakes. Like we needed to have something more to fear in our dreams, let alone in reality.
Scientists at the Biorobotics lab at Carnegie Mellon University have done just that. No, not adding to our nightmares, but instead created a robotic snake with the ability to crawl, swim, and climb trees. The robot it's self is tethered to an external power supply, for now. "Uncle Sam," as the snake is called, is also modular, meaning you can add or subtract to it's length depending on the task. How about battery segments? Imagine the jobs ranging from helping trapped miners, counter-terrorism, to the ever fearful colonoscopy. This isn't Carnegie's first robotic snake however, as there are smaller versions that have the same articulation and movement. See their website.

Watch the Uncle Sam in action. The leg climbing sequence is frightening.
