Digitally controlled broadcast radio receievrs

Hello everyone

A new design I'm working on is basically a whole-house integrated entertainment system.

In each room is a small touch panel where you can select the audio for that room from a brace of common sources, like a media server, cd player, iPod, Satellite receiver etc etc

All the sources are connected to a common control module, which is basically a smart matrix connecting rooms to sources.

The customer wants a pair of AM/FM Radio receivers built into the matrix.

I've been looking at digitally controlled radio receivers, and found the Silicon Labs Si4735 chip - which would be ideal for this project.

However here is the rub - no one stocks it. Farnell do not list it; Mouser and Digikey list it, but mouser's minimum order quantity is 190 and DigiKey's moq is 5000!

Silicon Labs do not offer it in their product sample range, and will not sell direct in an area where they have a distributor.

So, here's the question, and it's a two part-er :-

A. Where can I buy this chip in small qunatities in the UK? (Small quantities for BETA, production will be runs of 100 or 200 at a time).

or

B. Can anyone suggest an easier to find alternative, preferably from Farnell, with the following features:

i. Selectable AM/FM reception

ii. Controllable by micro processor (ie embeddable)

iii. Gives RDS data such as channel name/genre.

Thanks in advance

Kenny M.

    Hi Kenny,

I've sent your request to our tech support and product guys. They may be able to source the chips for you if theres nothing similar at Farnell

    Thanks Alistair

I had a search through the Farnell website, but couldn't see anything similar - but that might be a reflection on my search technique more than anything else :-)

    Thanks Jas,

Initially I only need a few devices to evaluate.

The issue is this: I'd like to evaluate the device - so initial quantities will be very low - probably only 3 units.

If I find the device performs well enough, and fits the rest of the design criteria, then I need to know that future supply will not be a problem - both in terms of short leads times and long term availability.

Production runs will be in batches of 50, 100 or 200 at a time.

The Si4735 was just an example part - in theory it looks like it should fit the bill, but there may be others - I'm sure there must be other broadcast radio receiver ICs out there.

    No problem, Kenny.

I'll be taking these devices on anyway.

I'll drop you the ordering code early next week.

As you say, there may well be other solutions &/or devices out there performing similar functionality but we will make a start here.

    Hi Jas,

I am also looking for the Si4735 in a small quantity of about five pieces. Could you please also tell me the order code?

    Thanks in advance,

    Marcel

    Jas,

Any joy sourcing these chips yet?

I'm at the stage where I need to comit to my design, and if I can't obtain these then I'll need to find something else.

    Thanks again.

I can't find 1835849 on the Farnell website, and  it won't let me add it to the basket.

A search for Si4735 doesn't return anything either.

Maybe it will take a while to filter through to the database?
