Suggest a project for me

awinning

Hi,

I've really enjoyed being on element14, and it has reawakened my desire to actually play around with electronics. I think the main spur has been reading about the Arduino like boards coming onto the market now. At the moment we have three Multicomp Arduino clone boards here, the Amicus board, which is an Arduino clone with a PIC controller here, and mbed. I think personally I'd like to try the PIC programming, but if anyone thinks the AVR or mbed is easier to get into, I'm open to convincing.

About me,

I graduated in 1996 with a BSc in Electronic Systems. Since then I have worked in a number of publications writing about electronics, but not practising. My favourite subjects were digital design and C programming. Currently I'm working on this, which hopefully you are all familiar with.

About the project,

I'm looking for something to ease me back into electronics. I want to use either one of the Arduino clone boards or an mbed. I'd hopefully be designing a shield/board for the chosen dev kit using EAGLE Freemium. The project should be fairly cheap and at an intermediate level, I'd like to stretch myself a bit while learning (and hopefully you are all going to help me through image).

Any and all suggestions welcome!

I know how difficult it is to come up with a good project for  yourself. I spend most days finding answers to peoples' problems, so it  seems unnatural to think of problems of my own image

The Scooter 'Puter looks very cool indeed, but there is no reason to build exactly the same  thing. The touch LCD Arduino module looks nifty, but not exactly cheap!  One alternative that many hobbyists use, is replacement LCD modules for  Nokia phones. They are only 50mm or so across and 128x128 pixels, but  they have their own onboard display processor that is pretty easy to  program. I wouldn't want to leave a big $200 screen on my bike, but a £5  one is no problem. If you didn't want to use an expensive Arduino, then  use something like an ATMega or PIC18 on a breadboard, and build your  own PCB. However, I think the MBED would be perfect for you. You could easily just start by making a battery monitor like the original builder, then see where your imagination takes you! In the first instance it only need be a box with a pcb in to connect the mbed, the display, some switches and i/o lines.

As an aside, I see Farnell have some colour OLED + touch screen modules in stock - I must make a mental note of that, it might come in handy!

Another idea that might interest you, is a tent alarm. I was thinking of something along the lines of a motion sensor, a bluetooth module and a cannibalised cheap pay-as-you-go mobile phone. Use the bluetooth to arm/disarm it like car central locking, and when it activates, it sends a text message to a predefined number. If you go to music festivals you will know how difficult it sometimes is to locate your own tent. With a system like this, you could text your own tent, which could then flash a light velcroed to the highest point.

@Kenny, I had a think over the weekend and I'm swaying in favour of pong. I think it would be a good start, testing, but not too testing I end up disillusioned. It also takes in the subjects I was best at when I studied, so even better. If I go that way I may incorporate Mike's suggestion about the mobile screen.

@Gregory, thanks for that, it sounds a really good call, and it's the kind of advice I'm looking for. I will give the PIC32 kit serious consideration. I also get the impression there are a lot of people on here with PIC experience. I will check out Amazon for that book. I was thinking of using a PicKit 2 debug express, and maybe even Flowcode. I have one left over from a Roadtest and never got round to doing a second draw. I'll check out the reviews when they come in and make a decision then.

@Jorge, thanks for that, looks very interesting. Unfortunately myself and maths don't get along, and there looks as if there could even be a bit of calculus in there. For a second project I may attempt it if I can find a maths genius to help me out.

@Mike, I really like the mobile screen idea, and helpfully I have an old Samsung phone with a really nice OLED screen and now I know what I'm going to do with it. If that doesn't work there's a nice wee Nokia here for £15. The mbed idea also sounds nice, and taking things one step at a time. I also love the tent alarm Idea, I could maybe see about a wireless kit for that, any recommendations? Or should I just go with a module and the mbed? I've been camping at Kelso and Sheffield this year, and maybe Ayr next weekend, so it would be an idea with a really practical use.

Does that mean when you go home to visit your parents they make you sleep out in the back yard? image

You are actually close to the truth there Kenny. My sister and her two kids moved back in. I'll be lucky to get a couch next time

My parents live in a Dalmellington - in an estate that was built 2 years ago, but only 3 of the 16 houses have been sold.

It seems they just built wherever they could in the good times. In Darvel they almost doubled the size of the village because the A74? to Glasgow was upgraded and you could get to the city centre in 40 minutes. Most of those are lying empty.

On another note, Thanks Gregory, Pic32 book has been ordered from Amazon

Having done a bit of head-scratching about Bluetooth dev kits, maybe this 433 MHz TX/RX pair would be better. They will need a bit of hardware hackery, but there is less in the way of new software / protocols to learn:

That's a nice little phone by the way, amazing how they can do it for the money!

I like the idea of using a replacement Nokia LCD module but wonder if one could be easily pulled from an old phone?  It might be possible to use Intel's 8051 controller, the Nokia display, and a  bit of memory to build a roadside sign for a model railroad.  Now with a bit better display and more powerful controller... Hmm, try a Drive in Movie theatre in HO scale with a real movie running.
On the couch you would then have your own portable battery powered drive-in theater and maybe the kids would swap a bed for it?

That would be hilarious, a mini drive-in theatre! The mini advertising sign sounds quite interesting

I'm sure you can use one pulled from the right sort of old phone, but check the prices on Ebay first, they go for peanuts with free p&p. I have seen them used as small monitors in scale model dioramas.

I just bought a Nokia 1100screen on eBay for £4.99 inc VAT + p&p. It arrived the next day. I haven't had a chance to play yet, but it looks as if it ouht to be easy to drive.

It's a monochrome display, so perfect for B&W film shows image
