Phone calls with belligerent customers

Yesterday, I had to call a customer that was having an extremely difficult time setting up a product I designed. After exchanging countless emails on the subject with this person, I readied myself for the stubborn, cantankerous, irate person I was about to speak with. I wasn't ready.

This person battled me on every front, from wiring to the personal. On one hand, he said my emails were condescending to his experience as an electronics engineer, with my simple to follow troubleshooting tutorials. On the other, he said he can't do any wiring because it was too confusing. My every point was counterpointed.

One particular part, a gear tooth speed sensor similar to this one, this man said can not work. In all his years as an electronic engineer, he has ever seen one of these. And he had a friend of his stop by to look at the sensor, and I was told his friend said such a sensor does not exist. He goes on to say he glued a magnet to it to make it work.

I assured him that it does indeed exist, and explained how it worked. And I told him to take the magnet, he glued on, off, and I would call him tomorrow. I am not looking forward to this.

What crazy customer interfacing stories do you have?

Sometimes the problem can be defined as RTFM! Rather than actually read the leaflet that came with a particular product, or dare I say even the wiring diagram, it'll get them on the phone complaining the thing won't work.
