    Prisma,

I actually have the full version of Altium Designer myself. It seems as good as Orcad. However, I am not sure how to do a lot in Altium yet. And my day job requires I "learn it fast or else," or so they said. Where can I take some tutorials on this program?

Wish I could afford it to just consider it.  I'm still running 99SE.  It would be easy to justify the $5k price tag if it was used it quite a lot or was a dedicated PCB designer.  I know in India they'll have someone using a package 24 hours a day to get the most benefit.  But there is not cost level to support those that may only average a few days a month of use.  I spent around 10 days solid designing up new PCBs from projects, but now I'II only use it to view the designs for programming and board loading... and use it for the next batch of designs in a few months.

    Hi Cabe,

Glad to hear you're impressed with Altium Designer! Regarding getting up to speed quickly, have you checked out Altium's online tutorials and training resources? Visit http://www.altium.com/evaluate/en/self-evaluate.cfm#training for a selection of learning resources.

As you have a full license, you can also contact your local sales support office for advice. If you let me know where you're based, I'll be happy to put you in touch.

    Hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Monika

Well I've taken the plunge.  I gave Altium a test drive and bought a license.  It will give me something to play with over the xmas break... learning the new features, importing all my libraries/designs and creating all the circuit snippets etc...

What is the license for Altium going for nowadays?

Last I was checking the capabilities for PCB work it was around 10k and there were no cheaper versions available.

I already have a students licence, but I really recommend this program to anyone who isn't using it already.

I have to use Altium for a living, but I really prefer Design Spark...  It does everything Altuim can do (at least as far as Schematic Capture and PC Layout with Auto Route) and Gerber generation as well as Parts List. It can be used for hobby as well as Commercial purposes and it costs nothing....

don't believe me?  try it: http://www.designspark.com/  I have no fiscal interest in them, but I really like this software.
