E-ink displays

Hello,

Does anyone know of anyone using an e-ink display for a 'home-brew' project? I've got a nice idea which would really be made with a large-ish e-ink display. I've had a bit of a search round and I haven't found anywhere selling e-ink displays. Largest I found was on sparkfun which was something like 12x2 characters, not nearly big enough.

The display from a Kindle or any other e-reader could be used but that seems slightly wasteful to buy something new & shinny only to take it part.

Any ideas?

Welcome to Element14.

Your best bet is to find a development kit, if this is a one of project. Take a look here: http://www.eink.com/developer_center.html. With a kit you will have all the necessary hardware to try your idea. However, they also sell panels.

Another option is finding e-ink display promotional items. Like the 2008 October issue of Esquire magazine, it featured a e-ink cover.

At $3000 for the kit from eink you might be better off buying a Kindle and a hacksaw !

Haha, yeah I forgot to follow it up after going on the e-ink website. $3000 seems a lot for what I want. Might try and find a dud Kindle which still has the display intact on eBay or something.

Had a look at the Esquire e-ink display and unfortnately that is a segment e-ink display which wouldn't help really. Never mind. Thanks anyway
