Help with sensor and data collection

Hi Guys,

I am working with a project where I need to detect objects at a distance of 15 feet from the sensor location, the sensor rotates about 180 degree to detect multiple objects, constraints for the sensor are,

Has to be reliable, some rate of failure is acceptable but not not much,

Has to be really cheap as I need to impliment at-least 1000 of these for a single project, so something under20$,

It needs to have a  assembly to rotate the sensor in 180 degree and be very accurate with positions as in the 180 degree range I just need to detect objects at 5 spots.

I am looking for laser range finder with serial interface, but in vain also I am looking for good ultra-sonic sensors.

But laser distance unit is the best but no-one sems to sell them, but there are really cheap laser-distance sensing devices available.

Also I am looking for an assembly to be accurate with the sensor motor thing to rotate it accurately.

Can anyone guide me to a good sensor module, I don't wish to make the sensor from scratch!

Perhaps Arduino Ultrasonic Module HC-SR04 Distance Sensor (under 5$):

    http://www.ebay.pl/itm/New-Arduino-Ultrasonic-Module-HC-SR04-Distance-Sensor-/270755218294

    Range 4,5 m so about 15 feet.

    Aditya,

Many people have conquered the cheap laser range finder. I gathered a couple for you:

Robot laser range finder (has schematics)

$30 dollar laser range finder project

With 1000 ultrasonic signals, you will have an issue. If it is indoors, even more so. I made a robotic camera that would track people using ultrasonic, and sound reflection was a nuisance.

Hey That sounds really cheap and workable with thanks, a lot for the link. I will surely order and try em out and report my results here!

    Hi Cabe,

Thanks for the links, I have been to most of them earlier but my issue is I do not have the time to make a sensor aand I need to make 1000 so tesing and fabrication only 1000 would be damn expensive! This is for my graduation project which is due to complete in a month or 2. I need something which is ready to go, I have a lead here but still hits a road block, http://www.sparkfun.com/tutorials/323

I know ultra-sonic could be prolematic, But I plan to device a scheme where they are never on at the same time, I am trying to detect cars in a parking lot without having a sensor over each car to reeduce installation time and cost.I wish some company would start selling lsaer-distance modules for a cheap, as you have 20$ distance measuring units, why not a serial module! Element14 please start making cheap laser based modules, please that are really fast say 100Hz and you will have really cheap reliable robots, next you make it 10000Hz and you will have a cheap lidar!

    How about this?

    http://www.philohome.com/sensors/lasersensor.htm

Seems to be well described, it's what I first thought of, any cheap laser pointer and an easy method of laser 'spot' detection.

I think range and reliability on ultrasound will be a real challenge. There's a good recent tutorial on a Parallax ultrasound unit here:

    http://tronixstuff.wordpress.com/2011/11/28/tutorial-parallax-ping-ultrasonic-sensor/

    Cheers,

    Marc
